Job Title
This position is responsible for maintaining clear and unobstructed access to water meter boxes and performing basic landscaping tasks at City-owned lift stations. Ensure all sites remain accessible, visible, and free of vegetation, debris, or other obstructions to support operations, inspections, and emergency access.
Examples Of Duties
- Clears and maintains access to water meter boxes by removing overgrown vegetation, dirt, debris or other obstructions.
- Utilizes hand tools and small power equipment (e.g., weed eaters, lawn mowers, trimmers) to maintain landscaping around meter boxes, lift stations, utility easements and access pathways.
- Performs routine mowing, edging and weed control.
- Assists with visual inspections of meter box conditions and reports and visible damage or abnormalities.
- Loads and unloads landscaping equipment and materials as required.
- Maintains tools and equipment in clean, safe and serviceable condition, including fueling equipment.
- Ensures signage, utility markers, and access points remain visible and unobstructed.
- Reports hazards such as erosion, flooding, or encroachments that impact infrastructure accessibility.
- Installs and maintains ground cover, mulch, or gravel as needed to prevent overgrowth or erosion.
- Performs minor grading or leveling around lift station sites to ensure stability and drainage.
- Maintains logs of site visits, work performed, and any issues observed.
- Uses work order systems or mobile app to update job status and location photos.
- Follows all safety procedure related to traffic, equipment, confined spaces, and utility proximity.
- Assists with other general groundskeeping or light-duty maintenance tasks for the Utilities department on an as-needed basis.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma, GED, or vocational school certificate.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated at the time of employment.
Preferred experience includes small engine repair and the operation and maintenance of landscape equipment.
Knowledge Required By The Position
Basic knowledge of landscape maintenance and vegetation control practices and safety practices.Familiarity with hand tools and power equipment such as weed eaters, lawn mowers and trimmers.Skill in the safe and lawful operation of motor vehicle and all equipment required for the job.Skill in interpreting simple maps or diagrams to locate water and lift stations.Ability to follow instructions and perform physical outdoor labor in various weather conditions.Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and report issues and request assistance.Ability to learn and adhere to City and departmental maintenance and safety procedures.Ability to work as a team member.Ability to safely use tools and equipment in this area of responsibility, including weed eaters and lawn mowers.Ability to recognize hazardous conditions (e.g., flooding, erosion, unstable ground) and respond appropriately.Work is performed in accordance with departmental safety procedures, landscape maintenance standards, and utility access regulations. The work involves performing routine manual labor tasks focused on maintaining accessibility and cleanliness of City utility infrastructure. The role contributes directly to the operational efficiency of utility systems and the accuracy of water meter readings, supporting departmental revenue and service reliability.
Contacts are primarily with coworkers and occasionally with members of the general public. Interactions involve exchanging information and reporting maintenance concerns.
Work is performed outdoors and involves walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing, grasping, hearing, seeing, performing repetitive body movement, demonstrating maul dexterity, and operating landscaping tools and equipment.
