Job description

JOB SUMMARY :

As a licensed therapist specializing in mental health and / or substance abuse services in a school based setting, skill in performing work through observation, interviews, and tests, to get information about patients is required. Based on his / her observation, this professional must be able to determine the right type of treatment for the patient. Provide counsel with emphasis on prevention. Work with individuals and groups to promote optimum mental health. May help individuals deal with addictions and substance abuse; family, parenting, and marital problems; suicide; stress management; problems with self-esteem; and issues associated with aging and mental and emotional health.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide individual, group, and / or family counseling to clients referred to you by SEIC intake and CCA team only.
  • Comply with Clinical Coverage Policy No. 8C NCAC and Clinical Coverage Policy No. 8-I.
  • Assure all progress notes are completed within 24 hours of services delivered.
  • Assure PCP / Treatment Plan is completed within 15 days of first service.
  • Provider will not conduct independent CCA, but provide care initiate PCP based on recommendations from CCA conducted by SEIC staff.
  • Comply with SEIC EMR requirements.
  • Comply with SEIC training requirements.
  • Assure all clients referred by SEIC with recommendations for Outpatient Therapy is supported and documented in your PCP / Individualized Plan of Care.
  • Assure all UM / medical necessity and authorization information is documented to substantiate medical necessity for outpatient behavioral health services, including appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes.
  • Clients will be scheduled through SEIC EMR scheduling system.
  • Clients will be referred to higher level of care as indicated and when medically necessary.
  • School based Therapist will see children within the scope of their licenses for substance use and behavioral health disorders.
  • Coordinate with primary care provider and SEIC case management team as required; Abide by all State and Federal regulations, legislation, or requirements that the Facility be subject to including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
  • Verify each Medicaid beneficiary's eligibility each time a service is rendered.
  • Provide services under the overall direction and supervision of a physician licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy, or other approved individuals (nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, physician assistants), who must be immediately available by phone or pager.
  • Ensure assessments include the child or adolescent and, as appropriate, the parent or caregiver.
  • Prepare and maintain all required treatment records and reports, including referral reason,

assessment results, diagnosis, signed treatment plan, intervention details (date, duration, purpose, nature, outcome), provider signature and credentials, consults, follow-up, and releases of information.

  • Required Skills and Abilities :

  • Ability to listen and talk to clients to understand their problems
  • Knowledge and skill in counseling clients and helping them make informed decisions about themselves, their lives, and relationships
  • Ability to coordinate with applicable school system officials the scope of services recommended for the client
  • Expertise in educating patients on how to analyze their problems and make informed decisions about themselves that would help them deal with the problem
  • Ability to make use of a number of therapeutic measures to address issues and carry out mental health evaluation and risk assessment of patients as and when required
  • Monitor treatment of patients by maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Complete documentation in a timely manner and provide appropriate documents as required by other professionals for further treatment of the individual
  • Ability and willingness to schedule client appointments, either at home or in the community, when the client is unable to travel to the office
  • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to clients' treatment.
  • Encourage clients to express their feelings and discuss what is happening in their lives, and help them to develop insight into themselves and their relationships.
  • Guide clients in the development of skills and strategies for dealing with their problems.
  • Prepare and maintain all required treatment records and reports.
  • Counsel clients and patients, individually and in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making changes.
  • Act as client advocates in order to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of treatment plans based on clinical experience and knowledge.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to perform clinical assessments and develop treatment plans.
  • Evaluate clients' physical or mental condition based on review of client information.
  • Meet with families, probation officers, police, and other authorized parties in order to exchange necessary information during the treatment process.
  • Refer patients, clients, or family members to community resources or to specialists as necessary
  • Counsel family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, and supporting clients or patients.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs and clients' progress in resolving identified problems and moving towards defined objectives.
  • Plan, organize and lead structured programs of counseling, work, study, recreation and social
  • activities for clients.

  • Modify treatment activities and approaches as needed in order to comply with changes in clients' status.
  • Learn about new developments in the field by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, and establishing and maintaining contact with other community agencies.
  • Discuss with individual patients their plans for life after leaving therapy.
  • Gather information about community mental health needs and resources that could be used in conjunction with therapy.
  • Coordinate with prescribers regarding clients' use of medications.
  • Supervise other counselors, including provisionally licensed staff, professionals, and paraprofessionals.
  • Plan and conduct programs to prevent substance abuse or improve community health and counseling services.
  • Facilitate workshops and courses about mental health issues.
  • Knowledge Requirements

  • Psychology Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Therapy and Counseling Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
  • English Language Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Education and Training Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Sociology and Anthropology Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures and their history and origins.
  • Customer and Personal Service Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Administration and Management Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of North Carolina's mental health / substance abuse / developmental disabilities state plan, and of current trends and methods employed in the care, treatment, habilitation, and evaluation of clients.

  • Occupational Certificates / Licenses

  • North Carolina Driver's License
  • Must be licensed in North Carolina as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Advanced Practice Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP), or Licensed Psychologist.
  • Educational / Vocational Preparation

  • Master's degree in psychology, social work, or related field and preferred three years' experience; preferably post- Master's in the mental health services field.
