The Respiratory Care Supervisor (RCS) is the front-line representative for the Respiratory Care Management Team; assuring by observation and audits those department clinical regulatory financial practices and resources meet policy and operational needs of the hospital. The RCS oversees shift operations of the Respiratory Therapy Department. Provides direct patient care staff development and training; resolves patient care and equipment problems; participates in process improvement initiatives; monitors work performance of assigned therapists; assists staff at the bedside; and performs related administrative functions. Also assist the RC Leadership Team in establishing best practice performance practice standards and assures adherence to department Clinical Practice Guidelines. The RCS advocates and requires accountability professional communication teamwork and shared decision-making of their team members. The RCS serves as a professional role model leader and mentor to members of the healthcare team. This position must demonstrate a commitment to quality service for our patients the public and our co-workers and be able to make immediate decisions with minimal supervision.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Directs and coordinates all clinical and support staff assigned to the shift; develops daily operational assignments and assures workload assignments are appropriate based on clinical competence of the respiratory therapist and needs of the patients.
Redistributes staff and resources as necessary to ensure safe effective and efficient operations. Balances operational and patient care needs with budget performance targets.
Assumes a leadership role in the development and implementation of policies and Performance Improvement activities. Collaborates with the Respiratory Care Leadership Team to assure policies procedures and clinical practices are up to date and evidenced-based best practice.
Delivers competent care in all clinical settings applying advanced clinical skills to intervene in complex patient care situations and assists staff with technical and clinical support.
Plans and performs quality improvement activities and audits. Develops documents and implements plans tools and activities to improve quality and patient safety.
Responds to assesses and resolves all emergency situations.
Intervenes (as needed) to ensure safe and well-coordinated patient care is escalated to the chain of command for medical emergencies; insures sufficient availability of clean and properly functioning equipment.
Conducts daily staffing huddles for the purpose of staff development and dissemination of information.
Models and encourages clear and open communication and sharing of ideas. Fosters teamwork and involves others in decision-making and problem solving and facilitates problem solving and conflict resolution.
Acts as a liaison between staff therapists physicians nursing and other personnel within the clinical service. Identifies existing and / or potential problem areas and offers appropriate solutions.
Promotes creativity and discovery consistently seeks methods to improve work uses new knowledge to drive change and innovation seeks support for new systems and processes from key stakeholders (i.e. peers staff physicians nurses etc.).
