The National Housing Conference (NHC) is seeking candidates for a Membership Director. This staff position plays a critical role in recruiting, engaging, and retaining members for NHC.
Founded in 1931, The National Housing Conference (NHC) is the oldest and broadest housing coalition in America. We were primary authors and advocates for the 1937, 1949, and 1968 National Housing Acts, as well as the leading advocate for the 2021 Homeowners Assistance Fund. NHC’s mission is to convene and collaborate through dialogue, advocacy, research, and education, to develop equitable solutions that serve our common interest – an America where everyone is able to live in a quality, affordable home in a thriving community. Politically diverse and nonpartisan, NHC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
NHC leverages its deep understanding of housing and community development policy and extensive relationships to advocate for positions and perspectives on key issues. NHC champions policies and guides industry stakeholders on strategies to address affordable housing needs. We engage members and policymakers to improve collaboration around diverse agendas and build consensus on vital issues. NHC unites the housing community to tackle broad-reaching issues, such as affordable housing supply, practical regulatory reform, and racial equity. We are a founding member of the Black Homeownership Collaborative , committed to creating 3 million net new Black homeowners by 2030.
We convene housing advocates alongside leading experts, policymakers, and public officials to find tangible, impactful, and achievable solutions to crucial housing challenges.
- Solutions for Affordable Housing examines how federal and local policies shape vital national housing issues.
- Solutions for Housing Communications explores communications and messaging strategies for expanding awareness of affordable housing concerns.
- NHC’s Housing Visionary Awards Gala honors organizations and / or individuals who make a difference in addressing homelessness and advance affordable homeownership and rental housing.
NHC also produces practical, solution-focused, best-practices research that highlights the challenges and opportunities for successfully advancing affordable housing.
Our Housing Resource Center offers thousands of federal policy resources to help users make informed decisions and play an active role in shaping effective housing policies.NHC’s podcast, “Beyond Four Walls : Conversations on Affordable Housing” engages industry leaders and policymakers in candid conversations about pressing housing issues.Our research, including the Paycheck to Paycheck database , educates members on current and emerging issues to address diverse housing needs. This database compares the cost of renting or owning a home in 390 metro areas with median incomes in 150 occupations.Position Summary
The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge and experience working in a membership organization, with a particular focus on recruiting, engaging, and retaining members. Strong marketing and communication skills are essential. Experience in affordable housing policy and finance is highly desirable. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead membership initiatives and drive organizational growth in the affordable housing sector.The person in this role will spend an equal amount of time recruiting new members and caring for our existing membership of over 300 corporations, organizations and individuals . A strong customer service orientation is essential, as well as the ability to collaborate with diverse internal and external stakeholders. A strategic mindset is required. This person will be charged with continuously creating new and compelling value propositions for NHC membership, while navigating a fluid policy and business environment.The Membership Director reports directly to Vice President for Marketing and Communications and is a member of the senior management team.Responsibilities
Membership Growth and Retention :
Develop and implement strategies to attract new members and retain existing ones within the affordable housing industry.Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including policymakers, industry professionals, and community organizations.Collaborate with internal teams to tailor membership benefits, programs, and resources to meet the evolving needs of our diverse membership base.Marketing and Communications :
Lead marketing and communication efforts to promote membership benefits, events, and initiatives.Work with the Marketing and Communications team to create compelling content for newsletters, social media platforms, and the NHC website to engage members and raise awareness of our organization’s mission and impact.Utilize data analytics and market research to assess the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and optimize strategies for maximum reach and engagement.Technology and Data Management :
Oversee the implementation and utilization of technology platforms to streamline membership processes, data collection, and communication efforts.Ensure the integrity and security of membership data, leveraging technology solutions to maintain accurate records and facilitate targeted outreach and engagement.Provide training and support to staff and members on the use of technology platforms and tools to enhance productivity and collaboration.Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Public Policy, Urban Planning, Business Administration) required; advanced degree preferred.Minimum of 5 years of experience in a membership organization, with direct experience in membership services.Proven track record in membership development, engagement, and retention within a non-profit or membership-based organization.Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex issues to diverse audiences through written, verbal, and digital channels.Proficiency in utilizing technology platforms and software for data management, marketing, and communication purposes.Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and metrics to inform decision-making and strategy development.Strong understanding of the affordable housing industry, including housing policy, finance, and advocacy.Demonstrated leadership abilities, with experience in managing teams, collaborating cross-functionally, and driving results in a fast-paced environment.How to Apply
