As a Traffic Design Engineer, P.E., you will support mid to large-scale transportation projects with a focus on Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and/or Signing, Pavement Marking design, ITS, Signals, and Lighting.
This role is ideal for an experienced traffic engineer who is technically strong, detail-oriented, and motivated to grow into larger project responsibilities while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and public agencies.
What are the core responsibilities for the role?
- Develop Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans for transportation projects, including temporary traffic control, detours, and phased construction
- Perform analysis, design, and plan sheet preparation for signing, striping, ITS, signals, lighting, and/or MOT for highways, arterials, interchanges, and intersections
- Support technical leads and project managers on traffic design tasks while ensuring compliance with MUTCD, AASHTO, and DOT standards
- Prepare studies, technical reports, construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates
- Coordinate with internal team members across disciplines to support project delivery
- Participate in meetings with clients, agencies, and project stakeholders
- Apply quality control practices to assigned design tasks and deliverables
- Manage multiple assignments and meet established project schedules
Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university
- Professional Engineering (PE) license required
- 5 to 9 years of experience in traffic engineering analysis and design
- Experience with MOT and or signing and pavement marking design
- Working knowledge of MUTCD, AASHTO, and DOT standards
- Experience with Bentley ProjectWise, MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar design software
- Experience with Synchro, SimTraffic, Vistro, Vissim, or Aimsun preferred
- Familiarity with UDOT or other DOT plan preparation procedures
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment
- Self-motivated, organized, and attentive to detail
- Interest in continued professional development and taking on increasing responsibility over time
