Join to apply for the Senior Architect / Urban Designer III role at City of Boston 3 weeks ago Be among the first 25 applicants Overview Under the direction of the Deputy Director for Design Review, the Senior Architect will lead the design review for development projects of all scales. The Senior Architect will be a critical member of project review teams, facilitating internal and interdepartmental conversations and communicating clear and actionable feedback, guided by City goals and policies, to project proponents. The Senior Architect will also serve as a mentor to other design review staff and play a key role in ensuring that proposed development projects advance the City’s design vision and planning goals. Additional Responsibilities In addition, the Senior Architect may prepare or guide urban design studies and provide urban design guidance to planning study teams. Design Review Responsibilities Lead review of a wide range of development projects, analyzing project documents and understanding project context, applying urban design guidelines, planning goals, and zoning regulations. Provide comments on urban design, infrastructure, daylight analysis, resilience, and environmental performance. Lead discussions with project proponents and City staff, working collaboratively to review projects and identify City priorities. Communicate design feedback professionally to stakeholders. Evaluate planning and design proposals, considering community input as appropriate. Urban Design Responsibilities Engage in planning and urban design processes, including site analysis and concept development. Work across various scales and contexts, creating analytical and conceptual graphics and models. Mentor staff in urban design concepts and guidelines. Develop urban design guidelines, feasibility studies, and impact analyses. Collaborate with other City departments on urban design projects. Manage internal staff and consultants on urban design initiatives. General Duties Advise senior staff on sensitive project issues. Represent the City at public meetings and with other agencies. Disseminate information about projects and initiatives to the public. Participate in RFP development and consultant selection. Prepare project status reports. Perform other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in architecture, urban design, or related field with 15-17 years of experience, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 17 years of experience. Massachusetts Architecture License preferred. Ability to conduct design reviews professionally and collaboratively. Strong understanding of technical details, urban design, planning, and zoning. Effective communication skills both graphically and verbally. Experience in public design review and complex project design is desirable. Supervisory skills preferred. Proficiency with AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, Adobe Suite, Bluebeam, and familiarity with ArcGIS is a plus. Strong oral and written communication skills. Good judgment, attention to detail, initiative, and decision-making skills. Residency and Terms Boston residency required. Union / Salary / Grade : EXM / ($106,000 - $144,000).
