Overview

Visiting Research Engineer or Visiting Senior Research Engineer – Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering (NPRE) at the Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering has two position openings for these roles to advance research on microreactor technology and related nuclear engineering activities.

Visiting Research Engineer

The position will support ongoing research and development in the NPRE department within the area of nuclear microreactors.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the analysis and design of reactor systems to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
• Conduct research on critical aspects of microreactor technology development, contributing to advancements in the field.
• Perform modeling and simulation of nuclear reactor systems to support research and development initiatives.
• Communicate scientific advancements and licensing updates to stakeholders through webinars, presentations, and scientific publications.

Compliance with DOE access requirements (10 CFR 810) may be necessary. All authorizations must be in place by the proposed start date of December 1, 2025. Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements of DOE regulations.

Appointment Information

These are full-time academic professional positions appointed on a 12-month service basis. The positions may become permanent at a later date. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. Salary ranges : Visiting Research Engineer $80,000–$100,000; Visiting Senior Research Engineer $100,000–$120,000. Hybrid work options may be available, with on-site work as needed. Sponsorship for work authorization is available.
