Cardiology Registered Veterinary Technician
Hourly Payrate : $21.00 - $35.00 (Dependent on Experience and Skill Set)
EVS asks all RVT candidates to complete a Technician Leveling Test during the interview process. This test measures math skills, critical thinking, and medication administration for RVT levels I, II & III.
Job Summary :
This technician is a vital member of the Cardiology service, supporting compassionate, high quality care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions. They work closely with the Cardiologist to coordinate diagnostics, assist with procedures such as echocardiograms, ECGs, cardiac catheterization, pacemaker implantation, and valve ballooning, and help manage both outpatient and hospitalized cardiology cases. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in cardiac anatomy, physiology, and common cardiac disease processes, with a keen eye for detail and excellent patient handling skills. They are organized, technically skilled, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, procedure-heavy environment. Above all, they bring a passion for cardiology, a commitment to learning, and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
Education & Experience :
- Required : Current RVT License and Registration with DORA.
- Preferred : College (AS / BS / BA).
- Preferred : Minimum of 1 years' experience as an RVT.
- Preferred : Minimum of 1 years' experience in a veterinary specialty service.
- Preferred : BLS / ALS CPR certifications.
Job Duties & Responsibilities :
Greet clients, obtain thorough patient history, and obtain body weights and vital signs.Understand patient assessments, normal vitals and alerting DVM when abnormalAssist Cardiologist with patient assessments, diagnostics, and treatments, anticipating needs and independently preparing necessary equipment and supplies.Perform and interpret basic diagnostics such as PCV, TS, ProBNP, and urine specific gravity; recognize abnormalities and notify DVM accordingly.Operate all in-house lab equipment, including IDEXX and Heska machines.Perform venipuncture for peripheral IV catheters and diagnostic sampling.Administer medications IV, IM, SQ, and PO with proper technique, accuracy, and understanding of cardiovascular-specific drug protocols.Calculate drug dosages, additives (KCl, dextrose), and CRIs including lidocaine, furosemide, and pressors; demonstrate strong knowledge of medical math.Place, maintain, and troubleshoot IV and central line catheters, with preference for proficiency but acceptable working knowledge.Set up and maintain snyder / oxygen cages, familiarity with changing soda lime, drying out drip trays, and snyder kennel patient set up / breakdown.Prepare diagnostic samples for outside laboratories, including reference laboratories and universities.Have working knowledge of pacemaker interrogation, cardiac catheterization, PDA occlusion, and balloon valvuloplasty; Confidently support cardiac catheter lab procedures, ensuring appropriate setup, sterile technique, and familiarity with catheter use and troubleshooting.Assist with or perform diagnostic imaging such as echocardiogram, computed tomography, fluoroscopy, and radiographs.Anesthesia induction, intubation, monitoring, and recovery of patients undergoing procedures, recognizing concerns / abnormalities with ETCO2, SpO2, ECG, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate; independently run anesthesia on ASA IIII patients and assist or preference for proficiency in running anesthesia with ASA IVV cases.Confidently identify and differentiate between common cardiac diseases such as MMVD, DCM, HCM, and congenital defects (PDA, VSD, ASD, PS, SAS, Tetralogy of Fallot).Perform and interpret basic 2D echocardiographic views; able to identify key cardiac anatomy and abnormalities. Set up and review Holter monitors with the ability to recognize and report cardiac rhythm abnormalities.Capable of completing blood typing, cross-matching, and transfusion monitoring.Recognize clinical signs of syncope vs seizure, CHF vs respiratory disease, and understand relevant diagnostics and treatment paths.Recognize and interpret ECG abnormalities including sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, VPCs, ventricular tachycardia, AV blocks, and SVT.Communicate effectively and confidently with clients, providing education and support regarding patient care and treatment plans. Knowledge of commonly used medications and potential side effects associated with them.Maintain a clean, organized, and safe hospital environment, including proper use of cleaning and sterilization techniques.Accurately and consistently enter charges for the department, monitoring charges for hospitalized patients and updating treatment plans (estimates).Utilize our digital treatment sheets (Instinct) accurately to document treatments performed for hospitalized patients and patients having procedures.Proficient in CPR Recover protocols and roles including chest compressions, intubation, ventilation, drug administration, ECG use, and recording.Maintain Cubex proficiency with minimal discrepancies.Other duties as assigned. A full-time EVS employee averages at least 36 hours per work week.
Hours can vary based on the schedule of the Internist. Some holidays, weekends, swing shifts, overnights, and on-calls may be necessary to fill the needs of the hospital and service.
A typical schedule for a Specialty RVT consists of 4 x 10 hour shifts weekly.
Opportunities for on-call & overtime with management approval.
