Job Description

The Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for the performance of scrub duties for patients requiring all surgical interventions simple to complex. They must be self-directed and capable of carrying out assignments with limited supervision. They are responsible for assessing the needs of each patient assigned to him / her and planning patient care needed to meet those needs in consultation with an RN. Once planned, their responsibility is to see that the plan of care is implemented through performance. The Operating Room Surgical Technologist will accept responsibility for assisting in on-the-job training and will perform nursing care tasks for the provision of a safe environment for the surgical patient. The age of the population served is neonate to geriatric as defined in the unit-specific structural standards.

Overview :

Under direct supervision performs delegated patient care functions assisting in surgical procedures and in the preparation of supplies and equipment in an operating room.

Key Responsibilities :

• Assists in the preparation of the operating room and in the selection of surgical instruments and equipment by reviewing the surgeon preference list and conferring with the circulating nurse to gather appropriate equipment.

Counts needles, sponges and instruments.

Matches preference cards [PLs] to correct scheduled cases and work with assigned RN to update PLs working with individual surgeons and surgical services.

Qualifications

2 years’ experience (in lieu of training program)
