Positional Summary

The Associate Director of the Duke International Student Center (DISC) plays a key leadership role in supporting international students, and their families at Duke. This position is responsible for strategic planning, supervising staff, and developing programs that promote the integration and success of international students. Major duties include overseeing campus-wide training on cross-cultural issues, managing orientation and support programs, and providing individualized advising. The role also involves continuous assessment and improvement of services, as well as collaborating with university stakeholders to foster an inclusive campus environment.

Key Position Duties

Leadership, Strategy and Supervision- 35% of Effort :

  • Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean for International Students to develop and implement a strategic vision for the Duke International Student Center that aligns with the division's strategic goals.
  • Represent DISC in University and professional organizations, associations, committees and / or by presenting the department and its programs at professional meetings and conferences as appropriate.
  • Oversee assessment strategy for the Duke International Student Center, including representing the department on the divisional Assessment Committee.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture within the Center and across campus partnerships.
  • Supervise DISC's Assistant Directors, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, promotions, transfers, performance appraisals, and vacation schedules.

Lead campus-wide training initiatives- 25% of Effort :

  • Organize cross-cultural workshops and development opportunities for university student-leaders, faculty, and staff. Partner with academic departments, Student Affairs, Human Resources, and other Student Affairs units to integrate global perspectives into orientation, onboarding, and professional development efforts.
  • Coordinate specialized trainings for campus stakeholders on best practices for supporting international students and scholars.
  • Create educational resources, toolkits, and online learning modules to extend the reach and sustainability of campus-wide training efforts.
  • Assess training needs and develop learning outcomes to align with institutional goals for diversity, equity, inclusion, and internationalization.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of training initiatives through participant feedback, data collection, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert and institutional resource on global learning, intercultural development, and international student engagement. Stay current on best practices of supporting international students.
  • Program Development and Management- 25% of Effort :

  • Design and oversee programs that support international students in orientation and onboarding, cultural adjustment, academic success, and career development.
  • Oversee planning and execution of International Student Orientation, workshops, and signature events that support international students in their transition to campus life at Duke University.
  • Evaluate and improve existing programs based on student feedback and assessment data.
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners to design initiatives that foster cross-cultural understanding and inclusion.
  • Manage major programs and initiatives facilitated by DISC including, but not limited to Passport to Duke and Durham programming (early student move-in), graduate and professional student welcome events, intercultural programming during that academic year, and other DISC initiatives.
  • Identify emerging trends and student needs to guide strategic development of new initiatives and services.
  • Ensure all programs comply with University policies, risk management guidelines, and federal regulations relevant to international students.
  • Advising and Support- 10% of Effort

  • Foster a supportive environment that promotes belonging, engagement and well-being through one-on-one advising and referrals to campus resources for international students.
  • Advise international students on immigration regulations, general tax guidance, and compliance with federal and University policies.
  • Provide guidance on cultural adjustment, academic success, and strategies for personal and professional development in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff on best practices for supporting international students and fostering inclusive academic and co-curricular environments.
  • Other- 5% of Effort :

  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet departmental, Division and University goals and objectives, as assigned by their Supervisor, Director, or respective designees.
  • Driving the Duke International Student Center van to support programmatic and divisional needs.
  • Anticipated Pay Range :

    Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $59,829.00 to USD $88,740.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education / training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Required Education

  • Work requires analytical, organizational and communication skills generally acquired through completion of a master's degree program.
  • Required Experience

  • Work generally requires four year's experience in personnel, college or university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to provide program management, advising and general administrative support. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE
  • Additional Job Specific Skills and Competencies

  • Experience in program administration, academic / instructional or counseling activities.
  • Cross-cultural knowledge and sensitivity.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and / or studying / living abroad.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office and skills in social media and video production, Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign preferred.
  • Skills in social media and fluency in a second language preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with international and transcultural populations.
  • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work in a team environment.
  • Outstanding organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects / priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Valid US Driver's License required to drive 12-passenger van and DMV background check.
