Position Overview

The Village Primary Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides comprehensive, patient- and family-centered medical care to remote village communities across Kodiak Island. This role delivers primary, chronic, urgent, and emergency care while supporting continuity of care through collaboration, telehealth services, and community engagement. The APP plays a critical role in improving access to healthcare in rural Alaska and ensuring high-quality, culturally responsive care for diverse patient populations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supports the organization’s mission, goals, quality standards, and patient-centered medical home philosophy while demonstrating KANA’s core values of Courtesy, Caring, Respect, Sharing, and Pride
  • Upholds KANA’s Code of Ethics by conducting professional activities with honesty, integrity, fairness, and respect
  • Provides primary care services to infants, children, adolescents, adults, pregnant patients, and geriatric populations in village settings
  • Delivers care through rotational assignments (typically 2–4 weeks) in remote villages, including travel by small aircraft
  • Performs routine outpatient care, minor procedures, and telemedicine services to support remote access to care
  • Provides after-hours emergency coverage, including patient assessment, stabilization, and coordination of medical transport as needed
  • Occasionally provides same-day or clinic-based services at KANA’s Kodiak locations
  • Collaborates with supervising or designated physicians for complex, unfamiliar, or unstable medical conditions; consults on all emergency cases
  • Follows established referral protocols within the Alaska Tribal Health System and external specialty providers
  • Maintains accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) in accordance with KANA policies
  • Participates in quality improvement (QI) initiatives, peer review, and risk prevention activities
  • Promotes patient-centered care by improving access, continuity, team-based care, patient education, and community engagement
  • Establishes and maintains primary care relationships within village communities, supporting long-term health outcomes
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in response to changing conditions, including weather-related travel challenges and variable resource availability
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to deliver comprehensive, coordinated care
  • Represents KANA professionally within village communities, maintaining strong relationships and appropriate professional boundaries
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, providers, leadership, and community stakeholders
  • Provides accurate coding, billing, and financial documentation; supports insurance authorization processes as needed
  • Works with Purchased and Referred Care (PRC) to prioritize patient needs and support responsible use of resources
  • Participates in community outreach, KANA committees, and organizational initiatives
  • Attends required OSHA, HIPAA, and regulatory compliance training

Qualifications

  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or current certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
  • Current, unrestricted Alaska license required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced certifications (ACLS, NRP, ATLS, ALSO, PALS) required as appropriate to specialty
  • Post-training clinical experience in a relevant specialty preferred
  • Must maintain a collaborative agreement with a current KANA medical staff provider
  • Must successfully pass the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention (ICPA) background check

Work Schedule

KANA’s standard work schedule is 37.5 working hours per week, typically consisting of 7.5 paid working hours per day plus a one-hour unpaid lunch break (total of 8.5 hours on site per day). This role may be eligible for rotational onsite work for non-local candidates.
