Summary:

The Certified Medical Assistant III has met the experience requirement as well as achieved and maintained the points required to have advanced to this final step in the NLH Medical Assisting Ladder. This position represents the ultimate performance for a certified medical assistant. The CMAIII provides direct and in-direct patient care under clinical direction of the provider they are working with and the office leadership within a medical office setting. Performs duties such as routine intake of patients which includes taking vital signs and chart prep, performing point of care testing as appropriate, and assuring patients understand their plan of care and instructions. May also be required to transport patients between hospital departments. They will also be required to answer phone messages, propose orders when there is not a protocol to support, and assure providers are made aware when there are outstanding tasks on their desktops/message center that they must complete. The CMAIII provide additional advanced clinical tasks based on the needs of the specialty and department. The CMAIII serves as a mentor to new employees and students.

Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Properly collect and understand the required vital signs, screening questions.
  • Properly gather a history and reason for visit.
  • Ensure a complete medication reconciliation is completed at each visit.
  • Perform venipuncture, label and deliver lab specimens, immunizations, and prepare patient for procedure.
  • Provides care in accordance with the patient's plan of care.

Administrative Assisting

  • Document all aspects of patient care in a timely manner on both paper medical records and the electronic medical record.
  • Manages clinical desktop to ensure timely communication with patients, specialists and medication refills.

Communication & Customer Service

  • Communicates and interacts with patients and families, providers, peers and other health care members to maximize successful outcomes and maximize function of the unit.

Medical Law & Ethics

  • Maintains a safe environment complying with NLH policies and procedures; reports and directly addresses environmental hazards and violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed.

Patient Care Coordination & Education

  • Facilitate patient compliance (e.g. continuity of care, follow up, medication compliance) to optimize health outcomes.

Medical Assistant III requirements

  • Achieve the minimum number of items/points (18) from the verification checklist. Including at least one from each category.
  • Leadership (Preceptor, NLH Committees, MO Committees and workgroups).
  • Quality & Performance Improvement (Quality Checks Lab, EOC, RL investigations, Pop Health Projects).
  • Collaboration, Teamwork & Community (cross trained multiple departments, competency as PSR, Community Volunteer, Picked up 4 or more shifts per quarter in additional coverage).
  • Professional Development (Instructor for BLS, ALS, MOAB, serve on State or National Professional Org, Have a Associates/Bachelors Degree).

Other

  • May perform other duties upon request and with proper training and competency documented.

Other Information:

  • Be in good standing regarding attendance and have no serious discipline or corrective action in the most recent 12 months.
  • Have obtained a minimum, overall score of "Meets Expectations" (3) on their most recent performance evaluation.
  • Achieve the minimum number of items on the verification checklist for that level.
  • Have manager approval to apply for initial advancement.

  • Ability to understand the language used to precisely describe the human body including its components, processes, conditions affecting it, and procedures performed upon it.
  • Spreadsheet application with the ability to use calculations, formulas, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming.
  • Email application with the ability to manage email as well as calendars, managing tasks and contacts, note taking, journaling, and web browsing.
  • Word process application with the ability to create and edit documents, format, use tables, apply footnoting, create table of contents and mail merge techniques.
