Principal Plans Examiner

The Pasadena Planning & Community Development department is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Principal Plans Examiner in the Building & Safety Division. The Principal Plans Examiner reviews the most complex building plans, structural calculations, and specifications for compliance with established building codes and other applicable laws and ordinances; prepares comprehensive plans; review reports; supervise the plan review section; performs related work as assigned. The Principal Plans Examiner is the first line supervisory class reporting to the Building Official and the incumbent is required to supervise, direct, and review the work of assigned staff. In addition, the incumbent of this position is required to be a registered Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California. The Building & Safety Division provides plan review and construction inspection services to enforce minimum standards to safeguard life or limb, health, property, and public welfare by regulating and controlling the design, construction, quality of materials, use and occupancy, location, and maintenance of all buildings and structures.

The successful candidate will be a fundamental part of the Building and Safety team. The ideal candidate will have experience working in local jurisdictions, with the ability to handle issues of a political or sensitive nature in the absence of the Building Official. The candidate possesses experience reviewing a variety of plans such as residential, multi-family residential, mixed-use, and commercial and industrial construction projects. The candidate possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills as they may be assisting customers at the public counter. The ideal candidate will be experienced supervising staff with the ability to discern which plan checks to assign to the appropriate staff.
