Join our team and help support Hampton's residents and local businesses in the State Income Tax department!
The Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue plays a key role in assisting taxpayers, processing tax assessments, and ensuring accurate and efficient revenue operations. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys customer service, detailed administrative work, and learning the ins and outs of local taxation.
Typical task :
- Assist citizens with personal property, business, and income tax questions.
- Coordinate personal property assessments using DMV records and NADA appraisal guides.
- Prepare, receive, and process Virginia income tax returns and support electronic filing of federal returns.
- Research and resolve taxpayer concerns via phone, email, and in person.
- Support DMV Select operations, including auditing and shipping daily paperwork.
- Analyze and audit Business Personal Property returns, depreciation schedules, and asset lists. Initiate collection actions for delinquent accounts and issue statutory assessments.
- Draft and distribute excise tax notifications and business license renewal materials.
- Locate updated addresses for returned mail or delinquent accounts.
- Interview taxpayers and handle complex inquiries requiring interpretation of tax laws and codes.
Minimum Requirements
Requires high school graduation or GED, supplemented by specialized courses / training equivalent to completion of one year of college in finance or a closely related field.A minimum of one year of full-time equivalent experience in customer service, as well as experience working in local, State, or federal agencies in some capacity, or closely related experience.Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion.Additional Requirements
