Summary

The Instrument & Controls (I&C) Technician provides daily operations support to the I&C Manager, I&C Engineering Technician and Senior I&C Engineering Technician. This includes the plant's documentation and reporting needs. This is a full-time hourly position located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This position requires UWUA Local 369 Union membership and reports to the Maintenance Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Senior I&C Engineering and I&C Engineering Technicians, as well as contractors assigned to support plant activities.
  • Maintain the Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) in full compliance with plant procedures and protocol, including all relevant documentation.
  • Assume responsibility for the safe and efficient performance of all work assigned.
  • Help determine inventory requirements and maintain critical levels using computerized inventory system.
  • Ensure materials, tools and equipment needs are identified and obtained.
  • Help identify necessary resources required to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Install, remove, maintain, repair, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and operate the plant instrumentation & control equipment such as (but not limited to) all process monitoring sensors, control loop devices, recording devices, Boiler Management System & Combustion Control Equipment.
  • Replace charts & pens, cylinders of calibration gases throughout the plant.
  • Have a basic understanding of Distributed Control Systems; be able to follow the logic diagrams and support troubleshooting efforts.
  • Install new plant systems and subsystems such as (but not limited to) computer interface systems, control loops, trip circuits, and process control components.
  • Maintain proficiency in state-of-the-art instrument & controls equipment and systems.
  • Maintain all tools used in the performance of duties in safe and good working order.
  • Maintain in a safe, neat, well organized condition the instrument shop.
  • Keep the immediate work area safe and neat; ensure the work area is safe and clean at the completion of the work day.
  • Report any unusual conditions.
  • Be familiar with all instrument & controls equipment within the plant.
  • Maintain the plant documentation (i.e. manuals & drawings), noting revisions, corrective updates, and addition of new documentation.

Basic Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED plus 2 years of trade or technical school (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in industrial or power plant environment working on mechanical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess computer literacy and be competent in word processing, spreadsheets, CAD, databases, & email.
  • Ability to read and understand complicated electrical wiring & electronic circuit diagrams, schematics, Piping & Instrument Diagrams, Logic Diagrams, etc.
  • Familiarity with distributed control systems, PLC's, and other micro-processor-based control systems.
  • Strong understanding of power plant cycle, operational requirements, control loop functions, and inter-system dependencies.
  • Understand regulatory limits.
  • Have and maintain a good understanding and working knowledge of mechanics, elementary mathematics, industrial electricity, electronics & circuit theory, hydraulics, pneumatics, combustion efficiency and emissions monitoring.
  • Process monitoring and control experience with analytical systems (Process and Environmental CEMS)
  • Have a good safety record.
  • Physical Requirements

  • Must submit to a company provided physical and drug screening as part of the pre-employment screening process.
  • Standing, sitting, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, walking on uneven surfaces, and grating, working from elevated platforms, scaffolding or ladders, required to lift up to and including 50 pounds and maneuver up to and including 100 pounds.
  • Must qualify to wear a respirator.
  • Ability to tolerate confined spaces, including manholes and varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Exposed to temperature extremes, high noise level areas, high pressure steam lines, rotating equipment, and dusty / dirty environment.
  • Required to wear PPE such as hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.
