Description of Work Unit

Veterinary Teaching Hospital

At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) we exist to educate the next

generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to provide administration and direction of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and provide a support facility for service to the general public and referring veterinarians.

    Position Summary

    This Veterinary Technician provides specialized support to the Small Animal Theriogenology Service. The role is essential for managing laboratory inventory, supplies, and equipment; coordinating schedules; maintaining detailed client communication; and ensuring the service runs smoothly through close collaboration with clients, veterinarians, and other departments. The technician supports procedures such as artificial insemination, sample freezing, and reproductive diagnostics while maintaining databases for frozen samples and reproductive management. This position also contributes significantly to education by training veterinary students, residents, and interns in reproductive techniques and laboratory procedures, ensuring a high standard of learning and service delivery. Their expertise and decision-making ensure the efficient coordination of complex cases, high-quality patient care, and the successful execution of time-sensitive reproductive services.

    Required Job Qualifications

  • Registered as a Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician (PVT) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), or eligibility to obtain a state of Colorado DORA license by start date.
  • Credentialed in the State of Colorado or other eligible state determined by CACVT.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a veterinary setting, with demonstrated proficiency in animal handling, client communication, and basic lab procedures.
  • NOTE : VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT - Effective January 1, 2024, anyone wanting to use the titles Registered Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician, RVT, or VT will have to be certified through the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians (CACVT) AND registered through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).     Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience related to breeding practices, reproductive health, understanding breed standards and certifications.
  • Familiarity with small animal reproductive cycles, artificial insemination procedures.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize time-sensitive procedures, and maintain accurate records.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills to effectively interact with clients, referring veterinarians, and colleagues.
  • Experience training or mentoring others, including students, interns, or residents.

  • Manage the Small Animal Theriogenology service phone line and email correspondence, providing timely responses to clients and referring veterinarians (rDVMs).
  • Distribute information packages, contracts, and forms, ensuring all required documentation is complete and accessible prior to consultations or procedures.
  • Schedule appointments based on critical reproductive timelines, including progesterone testing, artificial inseminations, and whelping management, in coordination with client availability.
  • Provide detailed financial estimates and maintain accurate records in databases such as the Electronic Health Record for service management.
  • Act as a liaison between the Theriogenology service and various Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) departments (ex., radiology, cardiology, surgery and ophthalmology) to ensure smooth integration of diagnostic testing.
  • Promote service offerings through outreach activities, website updates, and collaboration with the CSU development office.

  • Set up and operate specialized reproductive equipment, such as endoscopic tools for insemination, and troubleshoot equipment issues as they arise.
  • Maintain biosecurity protocols for sample handling and storage to meet regulatory standards.
