Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director for Primate Services, the Managing Senior Veterinarian will provide the appropriate clinical environment to support biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology. The Senior Manager is expected to assure that clinical and research support services meet CNPRC academic research goals and objectives. Within the limits of available resources, the Senior Manager must provide the components necessary to ensure a high level of animal care (nonhuman primates) in veterinary medicine and surgery. Manage primate medicine unit operations to assure animal health is a top priority to deliver the highest quality of clinical / medical, surgical, dental and nutritional diagnostics, treatment, and preventative care to a large non-human primate animal colony. Manage and provide quality and efficient clinical and research support services to research scientists, which include leading, guiding, and training professional veterinarian staff in the development of research protocol design, implementation, and program development. Collaborate and provide clinical research consultation (research design and implementation) and veterinary medical care management to staff scientists and research investigators. Participate in IACUC or alternate and associated activities and collaborate on multidisciplinary and independent clinical research activities supporting CNPRC research goals and objectives. Maintain and provide expert clinical and medical guidance and advice regarding care and use of nonhuman primates to research scientists, involves directly or indirectly supervising employees and managing medical and clinical care activities to support a 493,888 square feet of indoor and outdoor animal housing space. Current funded projects will increase the indoor / outdoor animal housing space by 61,306 sq. ft. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining USDA, NIH, and other federal, state, and local regulations and AAALAC guidelines. Special Instructions : The successful candidate may also receive a non-salary earning academic clinical appointment at the School of Veterinary Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology as a Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor. Receipt of official transcripts is a condition of employment; applicants may submit such at the time of application, if desired.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position

  • DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary medical college or school and eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California. Board-certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Experience working with a variety of nonhuman Primate species or other complex animal models; Experience with meeting animal care, housing, and research regulatory requirements; Experience in grant proposal preparation, preferably NIH format.
  • Proven clinical care program management focused on clinical and surgical skills.
  • Knowledge of institutional, local, state, national, and international rules and regulations governing the use and care of laboratory animals (USDA Animal Welfare Act, ILAR G

Preferred Qualifications

  • USDA accreditation to Perform federally mandated duties associated with operation of a laboratory animal research facility.
  • Contributions to the field of laboratory animal research and / @or medicine at Local and national levels.-BioSafety, crisis Management, and Occupational Health and safety training.
  • Knowledge of Gross necropsy procedures and basic histopathology of nonhuman primates. Skills to teach in a classroom and Clinical settings, seminar format, and on a One-to-One basis.
  • Skills to give written and oral presentations at national and International meetings.
  • Strong managerial experiences and Demonstrated Expertise in support of Biomedical research, facilitating research needs, and working with investigators.

  • Department Overview

    The Professional Veterinary staff is responsible to provide veterinary medical services for in-patient and outpatient areas and includes over 4,000+ non-human primates housed at the California National Primate Research Center. The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.
