Arts for Learning Maryland (formerly Young Audiences of Maryland) is devoted to enriching the lives and education of Maryland's youth through educational and culturally diverse arts programs. Through Arts for Learning, professional teaching artists from all disciplines partner with educators, schools, and school districts to provide on average over 560,000 hours of learning in, through, and about the arts to more than 155,000 Maryland students annually.

About the After School Arts for Learning Academy (ASALA)

The After School Arts for Learning Academy (ASALA), operated by Arts for Learning Maryland (A4L) in partnership with Baltimore City Schools, gives students the opportunity to imagine, create, and express themselves through the arts.

This exciting program runs four days a week, three hours per day , and introduces students to a wide range of art formsfrom illustration and spoken word to percussion, drama, and dancewhile also strengthening literacy and math skills through co-planned, arts-integrated lessons. Each site serves up to 156 students, working in groups of 26 with a certified teacher and professional teaching artist.

Position Overview

The After School Arts for Learning Academy (ASALA) Site Director is a part-time, non-exempt position reporting to the ASALA Director. The Site Director is responsible for the leadership, management, and daily operations of an assigned ASALA site. This includes supervising staff, ensuring program quality, maintaining a safe and engaging environment for students, and fostering strong partnerships with families, schools, and community stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Oversight

Uphold and model the philosophy and core values of ASALA, ensuring they are embedded in site culture.Oversee daily site operations, ensuring smooth delivery of instructional, enrichment, and arts-integrated programming.Supervise and support all site-based staff, including teachers, teaching artists, paraeducators, coaches, and contract staff.Monitor staff performance and foster a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement.

Staff & Instructional Support

Conduct weekly 30-minute staff meetings / trainings.Ensure all teachers and artists submit weekly lesson plans; review and provide feedback.Support arts integration / co-teaching planning and maintain records of collaboration time.Observe lessons (math, literacy, and arts exploration) and provide timely written feedback to teachers and teaching artists.

Student & Family Engagement

Build positive, supportive relationships with students, staff, and families of diverse backgrounds.Supervise students as needed, including classroom coverage, recess, late dismissal, and mealtime.Ensure consistent student attendance by monitoring data and contacting families of absent students weekly.Respond to family and community inquiries in a timely and professional manner.Plan and lead family / student engagement events and support the culminating student showcase and yearbook.

Operations & Compliance

Collaborate with site support, student support specialists, and school administrators to establish schedules, protocols, and tracking systems.Develop (with support staff) site-specific behavior management and operational policies.Monitor clock-in / clock-out procedures; enter or adjust staff timekeeping records as needed.Manage student assessments, surveys, incident reports, and end-of-year staff feedback forms.Ensure snacks and dinners are prepared and distributed daily.Provide verbal and written reports to Arts for Learning Maryland as required.

Collaboration

Partner with Arts for Learning Maryland and Baltimore City Schools stakeholders (including the Office of Summer and Extended Learning) to ensure program alignment and smooth site operations.Support partnerships and external stakeholders as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring a mix of professional expertise, leadership ability, and a deep commitment to students and the arts.

Current teaching or administrative certification (required).Proven success in leading educational programs, supporting staff, and cultivating positive school culture.Strong commitment to regular site presence to ensure high-quality staff and student support.Experience with restorative practices and conflict resolution.Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.Demonstrated ability to build inclusive environments that affirm students' racial, cultural, social, and gender identities.Knowledge of institutional and structural racism and its impact on public education, with a commitment to equity-centered leadership.Ability to provide constructive feedback and engage in critical conversations with staff, students, and families.Experience sharing effective practices to support students in times of academic or personal challenge.Strong collaboration skills with staff, families, and community partners.Willingness to use the school office phone or personal cell phone (with number blocked if preferred) to contact parents / guardians.Understanding of arts integration and interest (experience preferred) in collaborative planning with teaching artists.Passion for working with students and a commitment to going above and beyond to ensure their success.

Required Dates & Hours

Program : Monday–Thursday, 2 : 30–6 : 45 PM (3.5 hrs / day), plus arrival 30 minutes before program start. Meetings : 30-minute weekly staff meeting. Planning : 1 hour per week. Training : Up to 10 hours of asynchronous training before PD week.In-person PD prior to program launch.12 hours of race equity training during the program.Monthly in-person collaborative planning (first Friday of each month, 4–7 PM).

Time Off

This is a grant-funded, temporary, part-time role and is not eligible for PTO. However, employees accrue Sick and Safe Leave at 1 hour per 30 hours worked, beginning on day one. Leave may be used for illness, preventive care, family care, parental leave, or issues related to domestic violence / assault. Leave cannot be used for vacations, tardiness, or remote work.

Compensation

This is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary position .
