Director of Operations

Schaumburg Township District Library is seeking a forward-thinking and detail-oriented Director of Operations with exceptional project management skills and a passion for creating safe, welcoming, and efficient library spaces. This is a leadership role that requires strong interpersonal skills, the ability to foster collaboration across all levels of the organization, attention to detail and deadlines, and expertise in managing complex operational and facilities needs.

This is a full-time exempt position at 40.00 hours per week. Flexibility is essential, including availability for nights and weekends as determined by operational priorities. Salary range is $97,657.00 to $117,208.00, based on skills and qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and training to maintenance, facilities, and safety / security teams, ensuring alignment with the Library’s strategic goals and values.
  • Oversee and evaluate all Library facilities, systems, and grounds, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, elevators, roofing, and life safety systems.
  • Lead preventative and predictive maintenance programs; maintain detailed records of repairs, inspections, and equipment lifecycles.
  • Serve as point person for urgent facility-related situations and coordinate emergency responses in collaboration with outside agencies.
  • Manage capital improvement and operational projects, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to high-quality standards.
  • Prepare and oversee annual operating and capital budgets, monitor spending, and create action plans for cost-effective resource use.
  • Direct and evaluate vendors, contractors, and utility providers, ensuring compliance with procurement policies and securing competitive bids.
  • Supervise assigned staff, including hiring, scheduling, training, performance evaluation, and professional development.
  • Ensure safety and compliance with OSHA, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Cultivate partnerships with community agencies, emergency responders, and contractors to support facility and operational excellence.
  • Analyze, investigate, and resolve all escalated customer and maintenance issues.
  • Deliver clear, effective presentations and reports to the Executive Director, Board of Trustees, and staff as needed.
  • Support the development and monitoring of long-range facility and operational plans, capital budgets, and performance metrics.
  • Represent the library at conferences, meetings, and networking opportunities.
  • Serve as Person-in-Charge as needed.

    Skills and Competencies

  • Strong vendor management skills, with experience in procurement, contract negotiation, and performance assessment.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multiple complex facilities operations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proficiency in MS Office.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships across all levels of an organization.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to balance long-range planning with immediate operational needs.
  • Customer service orientation with a solutions-focused approach.
  • Ability to travel between multiple locations as needed.
  • Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in operations, facilities management, or related fields.
  • Extensive experience in project management, including capital planning, construction coordination, and budget oversight.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards, OSHA compliance, building codes, and regulatory requirements.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Lifting 60 lbs., bending, stooping, climbing, pushing wheeled items up to 125 lbs., reaching, handling and fine manipulation skills.
  • Ability to safely climb and work on a 12-foot ladder.
