Registered Nurse (RN) OB / Med Surg

Position Summary

The RN strives for quality outcomes and innovative practice in accordance with the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act and BBGH policies. The RN ensures practice is in accordance with standard of care and competency required for the area of practice. The position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self (or others who are under her / his direction). This is done, in part, through participation in performance improvement initiatives. The RN provides care in a collaborative manner with other disciplines to ensure optimal, individualized patient care and outcomes. In managing patient care, the RN will take a leadership role coordinating the interdisciplinary team working in collaboration with other health team members to enhance patient outcomes. Patient care may be provided in both clinical and non-clinical settings.

Registered nurses are qualified and educated for the role of care coordination, especially with high risk and vulnerable populations (ANA Code of Ethics with Interpretive Statements, 2015).

The RN has a responsibility to act as educator to their peers, patients, and their families. All aspects of the RN’s performance supports service excellence and a healing environment. The RN identifies and communicated needed unit resources or equipment to be included in budgets. Due to changing organizational needs, work hours may vary.

Charge Nurse : The Charge RN is responsible for maintaining high levels of patient care by assuring quality of care by exemplifying and ensuring staff are compliant with hospital Mission, Vision and Values, and standards of behavior. The Charge nurse is expected to establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.

The Charge RN is responsible for managing, supervising and assisting the nursing staff, providing administrative support and patient care. The Charge RN directs patient flow of the unit, and participates in admitting and discharging patient, assigns nurses and support staff to patients, and deals with various staff and patient and family concerns. The Charge RN is responsible for organizing and maintaining patient records, completing chart audits as assigned; assisting the nurse manager in ensuring that Core Measures are met in a timely fashion; ensuring that all components of documentation and other pertinent data is completed on every patient; assisting in the development of performance improvement initiatives; assisting in creating individualized care plans to address patient and family needs; fielding complaints and answering questions from both patients and staff, among others. The Charge RN creates the nurse staff assignments with careful consideration to staffing mix, skill set and patient acuity; supervises and guides other nurses in their work; and ensures that the unit runs efficiently and as per standards and regulations. The Charge RN is flexible and is able to prioritize and adapt during emergencies.

The Charge RN is responsible to encourage a culture that promotes staff productivity and accountability. The Charge RN maintains a cooperative relationship with nursing leadership and among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving method; delegating in a respectful and courtesy manner; and displays the ability to work effectively with different personalities.

A 30-day notice is required when RN resigns position.

  • Nebraska RN license, or license from a participating Compact State
  • BLS for healthcare workers
  • ACLS within one year of hire to position
  • PALS OR ENPC within one year of hire to position
  • OB, PCU, OR : NRP within two years of hire to position
  • OB : AWOHNN Fetal Monitoring course within one year of hire to position
  • ED : TNCC within one year of hire to position
  • OR : TNCC within two years of hire to position
  • Infusion : Basic Chemotherapy Course completion within one year of hire to position
  • Position Hours Per Day - Must maintain budgeted hours - Work hours may vary based on organizational needs.
