About the Position

Career Opportunity : Performs semi-skilled work in construction, maintenance and related service activities. Including installation, repair, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and replacement of equipment. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and / or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions. Examination Process : A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. Eligible List : You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. Selection Process : Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

Example of Duties

Essential Functions :

  • Leads and participates in repairs, maintenance, and renovation activities at the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center, including troubleshooting, inspecting, and replacing equipment to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Performs daily site assessments to identify and resolve safety issues while implementing preventative maintenance to minimize downtime and unexpected disruptions.
  • Maintains cleanliness at the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center and other city facilities by emptying trashcans, collecting litter, sweeping hardscaped areas, cleaning equipment, and removing debris from water surfaces.
  • Performs general semi-skilled maintenance of city property, such as cleaning and maintaining alleyways, streets, city-owned open spaces, assists other staff in construction and maintenance work; loads and unload tools, materials and supplies.
  • Operates pneumatic and hand tools; operate light equipment; cleans and maintains equipment.
  • Assists with delivering, setting up, and taking down equipment and supplies for various city events.
  • Mixes materials to be used on job assigned.
  • Identifies major repairs needed and reports to higher level staff.
  • Recommends modifications and improvements to existing systems and city facilities, and overall amenities at the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center.
  • Provides input and updates to higher level staff regarding equipment needs, structural concerns, and project progress.
  • Assists in managing vendor relationships by obtaining quotes, scheduling work, and coordinating with vendors, contractors, and city staff to ensure the successful completion of projects.
  • Maintains a variety of automated and manual records, logs and files.

  • Maintains and secures tools.
  • Oversees the work of on-site contractors or volunteers.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Minimum Requirements

    Experience : One year of general maintenance experience performing field maintenance work within the assigned area of responsibility. Education : Equivalent to graduation from high school. Licenses and Certifications : Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. Condition of continued employment : Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion within the last five years of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification. Special Requirement : May be required to respond to emergencies during non-working hours.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Knowledge of : Methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned. Equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Skills in : Performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned. Driving assigned vehicle in a safe manner. Performing a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions. Performing heavy manual labor. Understanding and following oral and written instructions. Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Dealing successfully with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone, often where relations may be confrontational or strained.

    Compensation and Benefits - 2025

    Compensation : Annual Base Pay Increases Negotiated as part of the collective bargaining process. Step (Merit) Increase typically awarded on the anniversary date of hire, up to range maximum.

    Benefits : Uniform Allowance Available for some classifications. Tool / Equipment Allowance Available for some classifications. Retirement Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7 / 1 / 15 and after) for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the City's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS. Deferred Compensation The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options. Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium + 50% of dependent premium. Life and AD&D Insurance City provides $20,000 policies at no cost. Additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance available for purchase. Disability Insurance City provides a long term disability policy : LTD : Employees who normally work at least 30 hours / week are eligible. Benefits begin after 90 days of disability. Payment is up to 60% of earnings, up to $11,000 / month, and may not be supplemented with sick or vacation. Tuition Reimbursement Employee Assistance Program Annual Physical Exams Employees covered by a City health plan and their covered spouse and dependents over age 18 are eligible for a comprehensive wellness physical exam annually at no cost to them at ARC Health and Wellness. Vacation (Hours / Year) Year 1-2 : 80 hours Years 3-7 : 120 hours Years 8-10 : 128 hours Years 11-15 : 180 hours Year 16 and over : 200 hours Maximum accrual : 250 hours, if hired after 12 / 3 / 2014 Sell-back : Up to 60 hours each year; must leave a balance of 40 hours in leave bank. Holidays City provides 12 paid holidays plus a birthday holiday.
