The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments, trays, and equipment used in operating rooms. The role ensures that all surgical instruments meet quality and safety standards, contributing to efficient, safe, and sterile surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Receive, sort, and inspect surgical instruments, devices, and equipment for cleanliness and functionality.
Decontaminate and clean surgical instruments using manual and automated methods.
Assemble surgical instrument trays according to procedure and surgeon preference.
Operate sterilization equipment (autoclaves, chemical sterilizers) following proper procedures and monitoring indicators.
Ensure all instruments and trays are sterile, properly labeled, and stored correctly.
Maintain inventory of sterile supplies, surgical instruments, and sterilization materials; notify supervisor of shortages.
Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of sterilization equipment.
Monitor sterilization logs, quality assurance tests, and adhere to infection control protocols.
Assist operating room staff with immediate instrument needs or replacements.
Follow all safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Support continuous improvement initiatives in sterile processing and workflow efficiency.
Qualifications & Skills
Education / Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of a Sterile Processing Technician program or certification preferred.
Previous experience in sterile processing, operating room, or healthcare environment preferred.
Skills & Attributes
Knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control, and surgical instrumentation.
Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and sterility.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records.
Good communication skills and ability to coordinate with surgical and nursing staff.
Physical stamina : standing for long periods, lifting trays or equipment, and performing repetitive tasks.
Working Conditions & Schedule
On-site role in the sterile processing department of Ohio Surgery Center.
Daytime shift schedule, with possible variation based on surgical case volume.
Exposure to cleaning chemicals, surgical instruments, and sterilization equipment.
Must adhere to infection control protocols and wear appropriate PPE.
Physical demands include standing, bending, lifting moderate loads, and manual dexterity for handling instruments.
