Job Description

Location & Team Gatherings

Intersect has been a fully flexible workplace since its founding in 2016.  We’ve been very intentional about the way we do things. We are not work-from-home, hybrid, or in-office – we are any and all of those options! Deepening social connections and offering shared experiences is a cornerstone of the way we work. We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Houston, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.

We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed hubs to foster more in-person connections while maintaining our flexible remote culture.

About This Role

As part of Intersect’s Environmental & Permitting team, you’ll support environmental and permitting compliance, revegetation and restoration, and vegetation management across projects in construction and operations throughout the United States. You’ll play a critical role in advancing and continuously improving Intersect’s Environmental Management System by managing consultants, coordinating with regulators, ensuring permit compliance, and leading project reporting. Your work will involve cross-functional collaboration with EHS, Sustainability, Development, Construction, Operations, Asset Management, Engineering, Finance, Community Engagement, Insurance, and Legal, as well as third-party EPCs and O&M providers.

Team Overview

The Environmental & Permitting team ensures Intersect’s projects are responsibly permitted, executed, and operated. We secure and comply with project authorizations, manage utility development, and uphold environmental standards from development through operations. By working across internal and external stakeholders, the team supports land stewardship, compliance assurance, and operational excellence. Joining this team means you’ll help Intersect deliver clean energy projects that meet the highest regulatory and environmental standards while gaining hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle.

  • Monitor and enforce compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations for construction and operations
  • Prepare, submit, and coordinate discretionary permit modifications and compliance reporting for existing facilities
  • Manage air compliance activities including NSR authorizations, Title V reporting, emission inventories, NSPS, MACT, and state-level requirements

Manage Incidents and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate project schedules, budgets, and compliance documentation
  • Oversee reporting to agencies such as CDFW, CEC, BLM, USFWS, State and Regional Water Boards, local air districts, DTSC, CARB, TCEQ, and transportation departments
  • Oversee Consultants and Field Work

  • Direct and manage consultants supporting permit compliance, vegetation management, SWPPP, and restoration activities
  • Conduct site visits for inspections, assessments, and community engagement events
  • Support internal reporting by preparing presentations, approvals, and communications for executives and stakeholders
  • Collaborate Across Teams

  • Coordinate with geographically dispersed colleagues across disciplines and functions
  • Provide environmental expertise to support Development, Construction, and Operations teams
  • Share insights and lessons learned to strengthen Intersect’s Environmental Management System
  • What You’ll Bring

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, geography, geology, hydrology, natural resource management, agriculture, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in land development, environmental consulting, permitting, renewable energy, utilities, planning, ecology, or a related field
  • Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations such as CEQA, NEPA, ESA, MBTA, BGEPA, Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act
  • Experience with permitting energy infrastructure such as solar, transmission lines, pipelines, or natural gas facilities is a plus
  • Familiarity working with federal, state, and local land management agencies, NGOs, regulatory commissions, public utilities, or Native American tribes is a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail
  • Proven organizational and project management skills in fast-paced, cross-disciplinary environments
  • Ability to summarize complex issues and identify next steps with minimal guidance
  • Familiarity with Google Earth and ArcGIS is a plus
  • Willingness to travel within the U.S. approximately twice per quarter (or as required)
