Paraprofessional Information and Hiring Requirements
Lexington County School District One paraprofessionals must meet one of the following prior to their date of hire:

  • 60 college credit hours
  • An associate degree or higher
  • A passing score on the ParaPro or ParaPathways Assessment (available at ETS.org)

Position Title: Library/Instructional Assistant, Elementary

Department: Instructional Services

Reports To: Principal

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • At least two years of study (60 semester hours) at an accredited institution of higher education; or
  • An associate's degree (or higher); or
  • A passing score on the ParaPro or ParaPathways Assessment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must have current government issued identification

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

7 Hours/185 Days

(Grade 7)

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year. Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

When in general education classrooms, implement plans left by the teacher to include working with individual students and small groups of students to reinforce materials initially introduced by the teacher. When working with individuals or a small group of students identified as disabled under Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) provide physical, emotional and academic support for them to gain maximum benefit from special education programs. Under supervision of the school librarian, when working in the library, assists in keeping library materials organized, maintaining library records, and providing assistance to library patrons. Conducts a wide variety of duties including maintaining catalog files, repairing damaged books, shelving books, maintaining library appearance, word processing, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

GENERAL:

  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One towards increased outcomes for students.
  • Interacts, communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders effectively.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment.
  • Operates general office and technology equipment needed for daily activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee and student information.
  • Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Requests and maintains materials needed for daily responsibilities and essential functions; provides for safe storage and proper use of all tools, equipment and materials.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

WHEN IN A CLASSROOM:

  • Provides instruction as directed by the teacher's lesson plans.
  • Lectures, demonstrates and uses technology teaching aids to present subject matter to class.
  • Maintains order in the classroom; supervises student activities such as working on assignments, recess, lunch, etc.
  • Maintains attendance as required by the school board.
  • Refers students with discipline problems to appropriate administration.
  • Operates computer, copier, calculator, audiovisual equipment, etc.
  • Interacts with students, coworkers, administrators, general public, etc.
  • Assists teacher with primary academic instruction and classroom activities; prepares and disseminates materials for classroom activities.
  • Follows students Behavior Intervention Plans, and Individualized Education Plans as directed.
  • Adjusts special equipment for student use as needed.
  • Provides for basic first aid needs of students.
  • Assists with basic computer instruction as appropriate.
  • Performs simple errands and tasks for students as needed such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays, etc.
  • Assists teachers in taking students to activities in and out of the school building.
  • Receives support, guidance, and direction from administration, special education staff, and general education teachers.

WHEN IN A LIBRARY:

  • Maintains and updates computerized inventory of library holdings and patron information; maintains catalogs and other collection records as directed.
  • Prepares and processes orders, reports, bibliographies, forms, library schedules, letters to publishers, library cards, etc., as assigned.
  • Assists with book orders and receives books selected for purchase by school librarian; assists with charging, discarding and shipping books and other materials.
  • Makes repairs on damaged books and processes more severely damaged books for repair at the bindery.
  • Prepares and distributes overdue notices; receives and receipts payments for overdue, lost or damaged materials; prepares related financial reports.
  • Performs general library duties, including procuring materials, receiving and processing new materials, cataloging, checking materials in and out, reserving materials for patrons, shelving materials and straightening shelves, weeding materials, mending books, preparing book displays, preparing bibliographies, etc.
  • Prepares and issues student cards.
  • Assists school librarian in managing students and classes while in the library.
  • Assists in maintaining library equipment and software; troubleshoots problems and initiates maintenance and repair work as needed.
  • Assists in conducting annual physical inventory of library materials.
  • Assists in coordinating special programs, services and events as required.
  • Maintains neatness and cleanliness of the library.
  • Performs duties of school librarian in her/his absence.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints, as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervises students in classrooms, labs and other instructional areas as assigned.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Lexington County School District One Board policies. Must be able to access reliable transportation.

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to understand and implement operational philosophy and procedures of the library. Ability to effectively supervise students. Extensive knowledge of Business English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mathematical computation. Knowledge of the principles of office management. Knowledge of the records and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Knowledge of the special needs of students identified as disabled under IDEA. Knowledge of the maintenance and operation of equipment generally used by disabled students, e.g. wheel chairs, chair lifts, etc. Ability to provide supplemental instruction to disabled students through explanation, demonstration or supervised practice. Ability to assist the teacher in various classroom and instructional activities. Ability to effectively assist the teacher in instructing and assisting disabled students in personal health and hygiene activities. Ability to assist in preparing materials for classroom activities. Knowledge of and ability to complete the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and employee information. Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation and utilization of all special education, general office and technology equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to demonstrate high level application of technology devices in the performance of daily activities. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation and utilization of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, colleagues and all other stakeholders involved in the activities of the job.

Personal computer experience required. Strong knowledge of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, electronic file management, the internet, and reporting and presentation software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to apply knowledge and current research and theory. Ability to organize and implement a flexible work schedule in order to meet reporting deadlines. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to submit all requested reports and documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with scheduled deadlines. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee. Computer literacy required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical demands are restricted to work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to fifty pounds, bending, reaching, movement from floor to standing and standing to floor, engaging in physical play and interaction with students. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as furniture or boxes of materials.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, listen and/or reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours. Duties of the job require frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.

Duties are performed in an office or classroom setting with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires ability to conduct duties that require constant attention working with students and interacting with a variety of adults. Occasional travel is required; no overnight travel required.

The noise level in the work environment for this position varies. The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day.
