Job Description

Residency Training in Diagnostic Anatomic Pathology

In collaboration with theDepartment of Veterinary Pathobiology(VTPB)at Texas A&M University’sSchoolof Veterinary Medicine&Biomedical Sciences(CVMBS), theTexas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL)invites applications foroneVeterinary Resident position indiagnosticanatomic pathology beginning on July 1, 6. The three-year program fulfills the eligibility requirements for the American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) certification examination.

Training in diagnostic pathology isprimarilybased on case material fromcases submitted by veterinarians from across the state of Texas(TVMDL) and the Texas A&M teaching hospital (CVMBS). This case material is supplementedwith a variety of weekly rounds and seminars.The residenttakes graduate coursework during the residencyin order tocompletetherequirements fora non-thesis Master’sdegreein the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology.The resident participates in necropsy and biopsy dutyat TVMDLandVTPBbut classes, seminars and rounds are held at VTPB.

The Bryan-College Station area (population ,) offers a culturally diverse college-town atmosphere, a relatively low cost of living, and convenient access to Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas-Fort Worth. The salary is $45,/yearwith tuition coverage, medical/retirement benefits, and travel support to regional and national meetings. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree.

General Description

The selected candidate is housed at the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) and is enrolled as a graduate student in a non-thesis Master of Science program at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science (CVMBS).

The anatomic pathology resident, under direct supervision from a pathologist, conducts examinations of bodies, gross specimens and microscopic slides, participates in the preparation of written reports and communicates with clients on cases submitted to TVMDL and CVMBS during biopsy and necropsy duty rotations. The anatomic pathology resident has the opportunity to consult with other diagnosticians, researchers, and clinicians at TVMDL and CVMBS to enhance their learning experience.

The resident participates in veterinary student teaching during necropsy duty rotations at the CVMBS and mentoring of technical staff during biopsy and necropsy duty rotations at TVMDL. The candidate participates in gross, dermatopathology, neuropathology, ocular pathology, and gastrointestinal pathology rounds at the CVMBS. In addition to rounds, the resident takes relevant courses in the CVMBS, which are expected to lead to the completion a non-thesis Master of Science of degree. Opportunities to spend time in other TVMDL locations (Gonzalez, Center, Canyon) is encouraged.

Responsibilities

Testing: Under the direct supervision of a pathologist, the anatomic pathology resident participates in conducting microscopic and gross specimen examination on mammalian, avian and exotic animal tissues and carcasses to determine cause of disease.

Data Entry, Interpretation, Results: The anatomic pathology resident enters and/or reviews the results from histopathology and necropsy cases in the Laboratory Information System (LIMS). Under the direction and supervision of the pathologist, the resident coordinates multiple assigned cases when a pathology discipline is one of the assignments. Coordination of cases may consist of communication with the various sections of the laboratory, necropsy staff, diagnositicians, referral laboratories and clients to assure that requested testing is accurately completed and in a timeline manner. In collaboration with the pathologist, the resident is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness, in accordance to the TVMDL established/published turnaround time, of the completed report prior to delivery to the client.

Client Communication: At the direction of the pathologist, the resident may be asked to respond in a timely fashion to client calls about cases. The pathologist, resident or designee is responsible for obtaining or clarifying client information when carcasses or tissue samples are delivered to or dropped off at the laboratory for processing in the necropsy and/or histopathology sections.

Quality Assurance & Safety: The anatomic pathology resident is responsible for training on and adhering to the guidelines outlined in the most current Quality and Safety documents and procedures at TVMDL.

SOPs, Procedures, Forms, Other Documentation: The anatomic pathology resident is responsible for ensuring they are up to date on training to the most current SOPs.

Training & Mentorship: The anatomic pathology resident may help mentor and train less experienced pathology residents and veterinary students as needed.

Teamwork & Cooperation: The anatomic pathology resident is part of a team of pathology residents and pathologists at TVMDL and CVMBS. As such, the resident is collegial and seeks help as necessary for difficult cases. Conversely, the resident shares information as necessary for difficult cases.

Other

Performs work with adherence to federal, state, Texas A&M University System, and TVMDL safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Performs work in such a way as to not expose others or self to hazards that are avoidable by reasonable and approved methods.

Works in conjunction with Diagnostic Services and Marketing to actively promote new or modified tests, TVMDL services or other client-education topics by writing and/or editing copy, speaking at conferences or meetings, or participating in TVMDL-sponsored exhibit shows. Assists/hosts/leads programs for 4-H students, career fairs, student tours and other lab guests.

Additional Position Details

  • This position is required to work onsite during normal business hours M-F 8 am to 5 pm.

  • TVMDL is located on the campus of Texas A&M University (TAMU). Parking permits are available from TAMU at the expense of the employee.

  • Incumbent will be required to take a pre-exposure rabies vaccination series; TVMDL will cover all costs.

  • TVMDL is considered an essential component of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and remains operational for several “open holidays” in which overtime or compensatory time may be earned. For information on TVMDL’s holiday schedule, visit our website.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • State of Texas Veterinary License.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to diagnose and treat veterinary diseases.

  • Outstanding entry-level medical knowledge.

  • Ability to care for patients, in collaboration with a medical team.

  • Willingness and skill in instructing students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience inDiagnostics and/or Clinical Experience.

  • State of Texas Special License or eligibility.

  • Good understanding of veterinary medicine practice and familiarity with the function of a diagnostic laboratory.

  • Skilled in the use of LIMS, use of necropsy equipment, use of computer software for examination of digitally scanned images, use of microscope and basic computer programs.

  • Ability to clearly communicate with laboratory personnel, including technical, clerical and professional staff, and clients in order to provide clear results and/or recommend additional testing.
