Chicago State University Department of Art and Design invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Art History, beginning August 2026. We are looking for a faculty member who is committed to excellence in teaching, scholarly research, and student success in a diverse and inclusive environment. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to dynamic and innovative undergraduate teaching and support activities that encourage unique learning opportunities in our University Gallery program as well as the classroom. Additional responsibilities include maintaining an active program of scholarly research, supporting student mentorship and professional development along with department and university service.
Required Education The desired applicant must have a Ph.D. in Art History or a related equivalent subject. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The successful candidate will develop curriculum and teach a range of art history courses, from Ancient and Medieval through Modern and Contemporary subject matter, in a BA Degree program with degree options in 2D & 3D Studio Art, Design, and PK-12 Art Education. The candidate will also develop and coordinate course curriculum for Introduction to Visual Art, a general education course for non-majors. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with a diverse population of students. Several years of professional practice in the field. Preference will be given to candidates that also have gallery and museum curatorial experience and/or studio art practice. Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and/or community engagement is also highly recommended.
