Position description

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a postdoctoral scholar in oceanography as part of Bio-GO-SHIP.

Position perks :

This is a two-year position that is renewable, pending good progress and funding. The salary will range from 66,737 to 80,034 USD per year, scaling with experience as detailed here, and includes generous benefits.

Project / Position description :

The scholar will lead research projects linked to detecting large-scale ocean biogeochemical changes using a combination of remote sensing, modeling and in situ observations. Specifically, the postdoc will use a combination of ocean color remote sensing observations from the new satellite PACE as well as biogeochemical models to understand current and future changes to ocean elemental cycles. The majority of the research will be computationally, but it is possible (if desired) to participate in large oceanographic expeditions. The scholar is expected to lead several research projects and engage in external collaborations. We may be able to accommodate a hybrid schedule, but please indicate in your application if this is desired and how you could engage meaningfully with the researchers at UCI.

The Earth System Science Department at UC Irvine is highly interdisciplinary. It includes 30 faculty with broad expertise, all devoted to the study of the Earth as a coupled system. UC Irvine is located in Orange County, about halfway between the diverse metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• An expected or recent Ph.D. in oceanography, remote sensing, or geoscience.
• Scientific experience with biogeochemistry or related field
• Experience with 'big data', modeling or other computationally intensive approaches.
• Detail oriented with strong organizational and communication skills.
