The UCSD Mathematics Department is a dynamic unit with 61 faculty, approximately 330 additional non-FTEs in various instructional and research titles. These academics work on a broad range research funded from a diverse range of federal, state and private agencies. The department is comprised of 17 career staff, and 167 Master's and Ph.D. students. All working together to generate high caliber research in a broad range of fields and provides an outstanding graduate program that attracts top-ranked students who contribute to the department’s academic reputation. The department maintains a large undergraduate course of study that prepares pure and applied majors (over 2400) in Mathematics, as well as 57 other majors across the campus, with the strong fundamental background in mathematics needed to succeed in a variety of career options. The faculty are engaged in a vigorous research program with an average of 72 active awards in many interdisciplinary areas totaling approximately $20M/Yr. and an instructional program that enrolls approximately 30,000 graduates and undergraduates per year. As the fundamental language of science, Mathematics is an essential intellectual tool required by a trained workforce to create the technological advances of the future.

The department is the home of The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCoM) consists of a broad and diverse group of faculty, researchers, and students, who share a common interest in the mathematical aspects of computation. And the home of the Director of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project an intersegmental education project in California

Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department/school/college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

Under general supervision of the Director of Student Affairs, responsible for coordinating and implementing student financial support for 120+ graduate students, and all undergraduate student appointments (additional ~80 students annually). Develop and maintain systems/methods for tracking student appointments, financial expenditures, and data collection and coordination of support according to both academic and financial policy guidelines. Responsible for coordinating student affairs requirements (degree requirements, time limits, exams, student progress) with support needs. Serve as the primary support contact for multiple types of appointments and sources (multiple type fellowships, Graduate Student Growth and Excellence Initiative, BG, GSRs, TA/Tutor/Reader), working closely in conjunction with the student affairs director, faculty, graduate advisors, and fiscal managers. Serve as primary financial support advisor to faculty, staff, and students regarding student support expenditures, policies (University, funding source, union, etc.), and integration with the academic program. Share in the coordination of all Graduate/Undergraduate UCPath entries, funding changes, and hirings. Under the direction of the Director of Student Affairs, coordinate the Department’s, Summer Session program.

  • Must be available to work occasional overtime during evenings and weekends as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply principles of student affairs funding and how these relate to academic programs in the coordination of student support from advising and fiscal perspectives (i.e. time limits and exams, student progress) and of general issues related to the intersection of student affairs with fellowship policies, employment policy, union guidelines, etc.

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Demonstrated experience and competency with Windows OS and a variety of software including system and networking software, Microsoft Office suite, email, and a variety of web-based programs and browsers, with the willingness and ability to update and increase skills as needed to meet the goals of the unit and the division.

  • Skill in projecting salary, benefits, and indirect costs with knowledge of payroll and personnel regulations impacting such costs.

  • Ability to interpret academic material, training grant language, and adapt it for presentation on electronic webpages.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Knowledge of accounting systems and records, appointment rules, and regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze large quantities of data, extract relevant data, compile, analyze, and present data (reports, models, charts, forecasting).

  • Understanding of University rules and regulations. Proven ability to compile, interpret, and analyze data utilizing multiple resources and references (including other University offices and departments), and present data effectively. Demonstrated ability to learn, interpret, and apply complex rules and regulations.

  • Interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and diplomatically at all organizational levels, both verbally and in writing. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population including the business community, academicians, staff, and students.

  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality required by law for student grades, financial information, etc. as well as confidentiality of department business, etc

PREFERRED

  • Knowledge of Math and CSME graduate degree programs, policies and procedures, curriculum requirements, and ability to implement program goals and objectives.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 - $42.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
