Overview
Professional Engineer 1 (Civil / Transportation) (NYHELPS) role at NYS Department of Transportation. This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
Duties and Responsibilities
- Be the Consultant Job Manager and / or the Structures Design Squad Leader for an in-house bridge design squad for bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects.
- Manage in-house design squads and / or consultants for bridge rehabilitation and / or replacement projects.
- Develop / review project scope and design reports for bridge rehabilitation and / or replacement projects.
- Perform field inspections and prepare necessary reports in support of contract documents for structure rehabilitations.
- Review structural analyses (including high-complexity cases) related to design, estimating, and preparation of contract documents for replacement and rehabilitation projects using department software tools.
- Develop / review detailed structural drawings, specifications, and estimates for bridge projects.
- Oversee all technical and administrative aspects of bridge rehabilitation and / or replacement projects.
- Develop and maintain project schedules using Primavera P6; coordinate with internal and external groups and agencies to obtain necessary permits.
Minimum Qualifications
This title is part of NY HELPS. To be considered, applicants must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position.
Either 1) a New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration AND a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below; or 2) a New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration AND one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.Qualifying degrees include : Civil Engineering; Civil Engineering Technology; Construction Engineering / Construction Engineering Technology / Construction Engineering Management / Construction Engineering Management Technology; Geological Engineering; Geotechnical Engineering; Hydraulics Engineering; Materials Engineering / Materials Science and Engineering; Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Structural Engineering; Transportation Engineering / Transportation Planning and Engineering; or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any above.Qualifying experience : One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways / roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer per Civil Service Law. Promotional pathway requires : New York State PE license and one year of permanent competitive service as Assistant Engineer (Civil / Transportation).

Continued employment as a Professional Engineer 1 depends on continued possession of a NYS PE license with current registration.Guidelines for Professional Engineering Practice apply; practice within your authorized scope of practice and stay informed of restrictions based on law or regulation.During the NY HELPS program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment; at a future date, non-competitive employment status may convert to competitive status without an examination.The starting salary for this position is $116,534 with potential adjustments up to $128,752 and additional geographic pay differential up to $13,500; a Mid-Hudson Adjustment of $2,000 or a Downstate Adjustment of $4,000 may also apply depending on location.Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.Details and Benefits
