Transfer Station Operator

Job Description : The primary function of this position is to weigh vehicles in and out of the transfer station and maintain transfer station property.

Essential Job Functions

• Weighs solid waste, recycling, and other public or private vehicles entering and exiting the transfer station.
• Provides courteous and respectful customer service in person and by telephone, supporting both external and internal customers through positive and informative communication.
• Issues receipts for transactions and / or funds collected and makes change for cash transactions as required.
• Maintains accurate records of cash, credit card, and check transactions; prepares daily bank deposits and ledgers; reconciles monies and audits receipts under moderate supervision.
• Prepares daily and closing reports; balances receipts; and performs bookkeeping functions to process, reconcile, and account for Solid Waste revenues and numerical receipts used each day.
• Performs data entry and light filing of transaction records and related documentation.
• Maintains cleanliness of the work area and equipment.
• Answers inquiries regarding services, hours of operation, and fees.
• Obtains detailed information about each load, directs customers to the appropriate disposal or recycling area, and inspects loads for hazardous materials.
• Operates inbound and outbound computerized truck scales to track and record waste disposed of or recycled, weighing both commercial and private vehicles.
• Assists the public with household hazardous waste deposits and pour-offs in the absence of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) staff.
• Communicates tonnage data and other necessary information to Transfer Station and landfill operators or supervisors to ensure proper disposal procedures.
• Maintains a log of all visitors to the Transfer Station.
• Operates heavy equipment as assigned.
• Oversees activities in the absence of the Solid Waste Supervisor.
• Cleans and maintains the Transfer Station facility, including lawn care, painting, and performing minor repairs.
• Conducts basic repairs and maintenance on equipment.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• In the event of special, emergency, or disaster situations, work outside regular schedules or in other capacities as deemed appropriate.

Qualifications

Education and Experience : High School Diploma or GED required. Six (6) months to one (1) year minimum amount of prior related work experience. Working knowledge of computers and other office equipment. Requires a Florida Driver's License Class B CDL within 6 months of hire. This position is designed as a Safety-Sensitive position. An employee in this position is subject to the mandatory Department of Transportation drug testing program, which involves random drug testing.
