Peds Transport RN Crd (3) MHO

Reports to the Director, Patient Care Services (Pediatrics). Responsibilities include the coordination of pediatric transport services and related activities. Collaborates with other Memorial Hospital of South Bend (MHSB) departments, the MedFlight Program, the South Bend Fire Department and community ambulance providers to ensure that processes and resources are in place to ensure safe and efficient patient care during transports. Represents Memorial Health System and promotes Memorial's pediatric services to regional referral hospitals. Maintains positive working relationships with referring hospitals and maintains follow-up communication regarding transport cases.

Maintains and strengthens Pediatric Emergency Transport Services (PETS) operations by :

  • Coordinating PETS quality improvement activities, which includes collecting and analyzing departmental statistics and clinical performance data; also reviewing all transports to evaluate quality of patient care, customer service and operational issues.
  • Coordinating the maintenance of the transport ambulance equipment, supplies, medications and charting records (including routine safety checks) in collaboration with the Neonatal Transport Coordinator.
  • Ensuring that core staffing requirements are met to maintain 24 hours per day, 7 days per week transport services and working proactively to remedy short- and long-term staffing deficits. Also preparing the work schedules of the Mobile RNs and Paramedics in conjunction with the Charge Nurses from the Pediatric unit.
  • Staffing in the transport role on a regular basis to maintain skills.
  • Ensuring that departmental clinical policies, procedures, medical / nursing practice and technologies meet or exceed professional standards.
  • Ensuring that departmental practices are in compliance with regulatory agencies and meet professional and safety standards.
  • Analyzing the referral market and developing innovative strategies to address market changes and strengthen MHSB's position as the provider of choice for pediatric care.
  • Developing and supporting a team structure; also delegating responsibilities to individual team members in order to ensure that clinical or program goals are reached.
  • Attending the monthly Quality Assurance Reviews of MedFlight transports. Also providing pediatric-specific support and education to MedFlight staff; promoting and encouraging attendance of same by PETS team members.
  • Providing SBFD the appropriate documentation needed for billing purposes upon their request.
  • Attending weekly Trauma rounds / committee, monthly MedFlight QI and bi-monthly Air Medical Transport Committee meetings.
  • Facilitating the orientation of Mobile RNs and Paramedics in conjunction with the Nursing Educator in PICU.
  • Maintaining all certification records of the transport team.
  • Establishes and maintains effective and positive professional and community relations by :

  • Representing Memorial Hospital in a dynamic, professional manner with the goal of high customer satisfaction among referral hospitals.
  • Responding to all referral hospitals when transport-related issues are identified and implementing service recovery and support promptly.
  • Ensuring that pertinent communication, back to the referring hospital, occurs in a timely manner.
  • Facilitating physician-to-physician communication as necessary to resolve issues or provide support.
  • Informing the Medical Director and the Director, Patient Care Services of issues that are not promptly resolved or are indicative of significant trends.
  • Conducting regular needs assessment of referring hospitals and providing leadership in coordinating efforts to address those needs with outreach education.
  • Conducting on-site case reviews along with the physician and following up with each referring hospital on a regular basis.
  • Conducts annual formal assessments of Pediatric referral network hospitals' overall level of satisfaction and their needs for educational programs. Also developing specific goals and objectives for outreach activities based on the annual assessment results.
  • Identifying and coordinating participation in key community outreach opportunities that result in a public awareness of Memorial PETS and PICU and are aimed at improving the health of children in the region.
  • Working closely with the Perinatal / Pediatric Outreach Coordinator to best serve our referral hospitals and community.
  • Provides leadership for the PETS staff in achieving quality patient care and programmatic success by :

  • Monitoring the staff's performance and productivity. Also following through with the staff to ensure that responsibilities are completed.
  • Monitoring the time management of PETS team members to ensure that patient care and programmatic needs are met and all responsibilities are addressed.
  • Collaborating with appropriate team members to address and follow-up on group or individual plans for performance improvement and development.
  • Evaluating performance and providing ongoing feedback to the staff. Preparing annual performance reviews; also coordinating skills validation for Mobile RNs and Paramedics and providing written communication to the Director when performance issues are not resolved and remain ongoing.
  • Coordinating PETS team meetings, case studies, clinical education and debriefing sessions.
  • Serving as a communication liaison between the staff and leadership by gathering information and feedback from the staff, communicating issues to leadership and effectively communicating information regarding leadership decisions and goals to the staff.
  • Maintaining an awareness of department and Hospital policies / procedures and changes and communicating important information to the PETS team members.
  • Working in conjunction with the MedFlight Director to ensure Pediatric quality indicators are met.
  • Leads and mobilizes the PETS team members in the stabilization and management of high-risk patients by :

  • Collaborating with the referring facility, Transfer Direct and MHSB's Pediatric Intensivist (by phone) to determine plan for care and mode of transportation.
  • Ensuring that all essential equipment, supplies and medications are on board the transport unit. Monitoring inventory records and maintaining narcotic records from the two PETS transport carts. Also maintaining the medication refrigerator temperature quality control log and defibrillator check for each ambulance.
  • Ensuring that appropriate safety measures are in place to reduce the risk to PETS team members, patients and family members on board the ambulance - in collaboration with the PICU Intensivist, Director and the South Bend Fire Department.
  • Monitoring PETS team members throughout hospital-based and transport care.
  • Maintaining yearly transport statistical data. Monitoring PETS team documentation and follow-up letters to referral facilities. Also sends surveys to all transported patient families to monitor quality assurance indicators.
  • Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by :

  • Providing direct patient care to critically-ill children in the role of the PETS Mobile RN or Paramedic on a regular basis. Also covering for sick calls, vacations and / or concurrent transports as needed.
  • Contributing to effective leadership decisions and accepting accountability once decisions are made to effective leadership decisions and accepting accountability once decisions are made.
  • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.

    Associate complies with the following organizational requirements :

  • Maintains license / certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position / department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

  • Education and Experience

    The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Indiana is required. A minimum of two years of progressively responsible PICU experience is required. CPN or CCRN certification is required or to be obtained within the first year in the position. Preference will be given to candidates who are a Registered Nurse, certified in Pediatrics and also have transport experience. It is preferred that the successful candidate (if they are not already an Instructor) will become a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (P.A.L.S.) program Instructor within the first year in the position.

    Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of nursing care practices, procedures and techniques utilized within ICU specialties.
  • Demonstrates program development skills, which includes the ability to develop program goals, provide action planning, identify and resolve problems and resource development.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in preparing the time schedules of the Mobile RNs and Paramedics on the transport team.
  • Demonstrates the organization and analytical skills necessary to prioritize a large volume of information and relay it to the appropriate people.
  • Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) to interact effectively and positively and articulate information clearly and concisely to others (including Hospital staff, the staff of referring hospitals, patients, families and Physicians) in a caring manner. Must also have the ability to negotiate, resolve conflicts and facilitate mutual understanding between team members and Physicians.
  • Demonstrates tact, professionalism and flexibility when interacting with a variety of people.
  • Demonstrates the ability to ensure confidentiality and use discretion and sound judgment when making decisions and responding to questions and requests for information.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills (i.e., data entry, word processing, PowerPoint, Active Staffer, and Excel). A basic understanding of database applications is desired.
  • Working Conditions

  • Works in a patient care environment requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, certain undesirable patient care activities and possible exposure to bio-hazards.
  • Operates equipment which is used for patient care.
  • Transports require travel, via ambulance or helicopter, to other hospitals in the area.
  • Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk / stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts / wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position / lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
