WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Divisional Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) reports directly to the Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of the American Red Cross and serves as a critical leader within the Medical and Scientific Office. This role drives clinical strategy and medical leadership for the nation's largest blood collector. Beyond blood collection, DCMO contributes to education and clinical leadership in therapeutic apheresis, cell collection services, and large-scale diagnostic laboratories, including immunohematology reference and HLA labs. The position carries national visibility and influence, with opportunities to shape transfusion medicine practice across the industry.

The DCMO oversees the development and implementation of medical policies and procedures for the assigned division and its blood regions. This individual works closely with hospital customers, coordinates communication between local and national medical communities, industry stakeholders and provides timely and accurate consultation in transfusion medicine. The DCMO also represents the Red Cross on professional committees (AABB, CAP, ASFA, and others), ensuring that the organization maintains its leadership role in transfusion medicine. All responsibilities must be performed in compliance with Red Cross SOPs, federal and state regulations, and applicable accreditation requirements.

Leadership and Team Development

Manage, mentor, and evaluate regional Medical Directors to build a highly skilled and collaborative medical team.

Work with scientific leadership to provide input on research and industry collaborations

Ensure adequate medical coverage across the division, facilitate cross-coverage agreements, and maintain consistent medical decision-making in partnership with BHQ.

Strategic Guidance and Consultation

Partner with divisional and regional leadership, serving as a trusted advisor on transfusion medicine, patient services, and patient blood management.

Act as designee for the Chief Executive Officer as required.

External Engagement and Education

Organize and participate in regional Medical and Technical Advisory Committees.

Provide continuing medical education to both internal audiences and external hospital customers.

Promote the safe and effective use of blood components through active engagement with professional organizations.

Patient Service and Clinical Programs

Provide medical oversight for therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collection / processing, perioperative cell salvage, and patient blood management programs.

Medical Oversight of Operations

Direct medical aspects of regulated blood center operations, including donor management, adverse reaction investigations, and product quality oversight.

Participate in the development of national policies and standards related to donor eligibility, component quality, and transfusion practice.

Serve as key strategic partners cross-functionally in developing blood product, patient services, cell and gene therapy and laboratory diagnostic strategies and services

Investigate and resolve donor or hospital concerns, engaging executive leadership as needed.

Serve as CLIA Laboratory Director for assigned laboratories and regulated activities.

Candidates must reside or agree to relocate to Southeast US or Illinois (Chicago). This role is eligible for relocation assistance.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED :

Education : M.D. , M,D., Ph.D. or D.O. with postgraduate training in blood banking / transfusion medicine required. Board certification or eligibility in internal medicine, pediatrics, or clinical pathology required; certification in transfusion medicine highly desirable. Must hold or obtain licensure in the states served.

Experience : Minimum of 10 years in transfusion medicine, blood banking, or related field; experience in blood center operations preferred. Scholarly and research contributions that support academic appointment are highly desirable.

Management : Minimum of 7 years in a leadership role with demonstrated success managing medical teams.

Skills : Deep knowledge of transfusion medicine trends and blood center operations; strong decision-making, communication, and presentation skills; proven ability to collaborate and maintain strong customer focus.

Travel : Up to 50% required.

SALARY INFORMATION :

Compensation states at 220K and may vary based on candidate's skills and experience and geographic location.

Note that the American Red Cross sets salary ranges aligned to a specific geographic location in which the work is performed. The stated salary range in this posting is average.C
