The Surgical Technologist supports the surgical team by preparing and maintaining the sterile field, ensuring that all instruments, supplies and equipment are available and functioning, and by assisting during operative procedures. The role is essential for safe and efficient surgical care and contributes directly to the high standard of patient service that Ohio Surgery Center offers.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare the operating room prior to procedure : gather necessary instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications / solutions.
Set up sterile tables and drape the sterile field in accordance with established protocols and surgeon preferences.
Assist with patient preparation for surgery (under direction of RN), including positioning, applying monitors or prepping the surgical site as appropriate.
Act as scrub technologist : pass instruments, sutures, sponges, retractors, and other supplies to the surgeon and surgical team during the procedure.
Monitor and maintain the sterile field throughout the procedure; anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond accordingly.
Assist with instrument / sponge / counted supplies reconciliation at designated times (before incision, during procedure, at close).
Assist with specimen handling : collect, label and transfer specimens appropriately.
Assist the circulating nurse or OR RN as needed : help with operative room turnover, cleanup, restocking between cases, and preparing the next case.
Ensure all medical equipment is functioning and safe for use; report any malfunction or defect to supervisory staff.
Follow infection prevention and control protocols (asepsis, sterile technique, surgical time‑outs, hygiene).
Participate in surgical safety procedures, staff briefings, case documentation and time‑out verification.
Maintain organized, clean and efficient operating room environment; comply with all hospital / ASC standards and policies.
Qualifications & Skills
Education / Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of a surgical technology program (certificate or associate degree) preferred. leaf-ohio.org
Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) and / or TS‑C preferred. leaf-ohio.org+1
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Prior operating room or ambulatory surgery center experience is beneficial.
Skills & Attributes
Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, sterile technique, surgical procedures and operative workflow.
Excellent attention to detail, manual dexterity and ability to anticipate needs of the surgical team.
Ability to work under pressure in a fast‐paced environment, maintain focus during critical procedures and adhere to safety protocols.
Good communication and teamwork skills—able to collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other OR staff.
Physical stamina : ability to stand for extended periods, move around the OR quickly, assist with equipment or patient positioning as needed.

Working Conditions & Schedule
On‑site role requiring presence in the operating room and associated surgical suite at Ohio Surgery Center.
Schedule may include early morning start times, variable shifts, and possible weekend or on‑call depending on case schedule.
Environment is the operating room / procedure room : requires adherence to strict sterile and infection‑control protocols, use of PPE, exposure to surgical equipment and occasionally high‑stress situations.
Physical demands include standing for long durations, lifting or moving light equipment or supplies, setting up / turning over rooms between cases.
