JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB GOAL :

To provide professional school nursing services for students and faculty in assigned school.

QUALIFICATIONS : High School Diploma or equivalency diploma.

  • Minimum of one (1) year successful experience in nursing.
  • Possess a current license of Florida Registered Nurse.
  • Possess or obtain Standard First Aid and Adult CPR certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge of federal, state and district rules, regulations and policies as they relate to job functions. Knowledge of the hardware and software applications used in assignment. Knowledge of normal childhood growth and development patterns to recognize abnormalities and symptoms of communicable diseases. Ability to read and interpret applicable laws, rules, policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize activities related to assignment. Ability to make presentations to a variety of audiences. Ability to carry out job responsibilities and handle sensitive information in a confidential manner. Ability to work independently and make decisions with minimum supervision. Ability to compose correspondence and prepare reports in an articulate manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, general public and government agencies. Ability to work effectively to furnish needed information to administrators, other department, governmental agencies, media, general public and parents. Ability to operate or learn to operate Titmus vision tester, audiometer, sphygmomanometer and stethoscope, computer terminal entry and audio-visual aids. Ability to organize and present health information in a manner to promote comprehension and behavior modification. Ability to assess an emergency situation, secure appropriate assistance and provide emergency care following current protocol. Ability to revise work schedule successfully when extenuating circumstances arise.

SUPERVISES : N / A

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provide health care for sick students and staff.
  • Communicate with parents and teachers via letters, notes and / or phone calls concerning care given, incidence / occurrence, pharmaceutical / medical referrals and / or exclusions.
  • Formulate a plan of care for students with chronic health problems.
  • Administer and chart prescription medications.
  • Provide treatments including, but not limited to, cauterizations, inhalation therapy, dressing changes, tube feedings, etc.
  • Prevent the spread of infection and communicable diseases through the use of aseptic techniques.
  • Communicate with physicians and other health care professionals on matters effecting the students and staff.
  • Provide support for emotional, self-esteem building, grief, depression, chronic illness and nutrition problems.
  • Provide support for disease prevention and healthy lifestyle promotion.
  • Document and follow up on referrals to include dental, hygiene, H.G.&D., incontinence, vision, hearing, scoliosis, medications and nutrition.
  • Participate in Child Study Meetings and the preparation of I.E.P.'s.
  • Serve as a resource person to students, parents, faculty, staff and administration.
  • Chart pertinent information in the Student Health Record.
  • Maintains health room log.
  • Provide emergency care and first aid as needed.
  • Complete screenings for vision, hearing, scoliosis, height, weight, dental and blood pressure as required.
  • Complete physical and social assessments.
  • Provide information to parents requiring financial assistance.
  • Complete Lion's Club application for glasses for eligible students.
  • Implement and monitor compliance with State Immunization and Physical Examination Laws.
  • Issue 680 A, B, & C's when appropriate.
  • Notify parents of incomplete documentation and make recommendation for exclusion to school principal.
  • Submit State mandated Kindergarten Immunization Status Report by October 1st of each school year.
  • Review medical history and compile High Risk List and distribute as required.
  • Maintain communication with parents to obtain all necessary information.
  • Compile statistical data as required.
  • Supervise, train and evaluate Health Technicians / Aides.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Provide First Aid on field trips as required.
  • Serve on various committees as required.
  • Write a monthly school newsletter article.
  • Provide training for health room volunteers.
  • Report communicable diseases to the MCPHU.
  • Participate in curriculum development and updates, Comprehensive School Health Plan and Health Manual updates.
  • Assist with Medicaid billing as required.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Light Work : Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT :

    Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

    EVALUATION :

    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
