Overview

TRC Companies, Inc., is currently seeking qualified candidates for the role of Vegetation Management Field Specialist. Successful candidates will be involved in a wide variety of project-based energy and infrastructure related projects including electric transmission, oil and gas, renewable energy, transportation, and other development projects throughout northern and central California.

Responsibilities

  • Travel throughout Northern and Central California to conduct a wide variety of field operations.
  • Identify avian and plant species commonly found in the western U.S. (California).
  • Conduct construction monitoring / oversight.
  • Identify riparian areas and flag areas for access / exclusion.
  • Coordinate with landowners regarding access to private properties.
  • Monitor field crews and provide direction regarding environmental compliance.
  • Collect accurate data in the field and produce professional reports in the office.
  • Utilize GPS units and phone / tablet apps to locate work areas.
  • Support energy and transportation projects involving a wide array of state and federal permitting programs.
  • Utilize door hangers, letters, phone calls, and in-person communications using state and local health protocols for in-person meetings.
  • Interact with property owners to describe potential utility work within the easement areas.
  • Assist property owners in determining their preferences regarding removal of wood resulting from tree-trimming activities.
  • Use GIS platforms and system maps to record the property owner communications and decisions the parties have mutually agreed upon.
  • Coordinate with tree-trimming crews, inspectors, and property owners to convey scheduling and scope of actions to be taken.
  • Conduct general and protocol level aquatic wildlife surveys (e.g., Giant Garter Snake, California Tiger Salamander, Red-legged frog, fairy shrimp), rare plant surveys, as well as other diverse biological field work.
  • Have a working knowledge of erosion and sediment control, best management practices commonly implemented during construction, and familiarity with construction of energy and / or transportation-related projects.
  • Conduct wetland delineations and functional assessments.

Qualifications

  • Employees will spend most of their time in the field. Regular travel throughout Northern and Central California is required for project-based environmental support. Short to extended stays in hotels are required.
  • The employee will drive to customer / client sites and walk outside during inclement weather and extreme temperatures. Work areas will occur on paved surfaces (asphalt) and unpaved surfaces such as forest, tall grass, gravel, and steep slopes.
  • Must be able to work up to 10 hours per day, which includes a combination of driving, standing, and walking.
  • Must be able to access remote locations on foot with steep inclines in adverse weather conditions.
  • Perform a wide range of administrative or technical tasks in an office setting. Require the ability to work under stress and to meet deadlines with a continuous, close attention to detail for accurate results.
  • The employee must have strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate clearly and concisely to prepare reports, specifications, applications, and correspondence.
  • Must be able to interact with all levels of management and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • The employee must have a commitment to customer satisfaction and the ability to work in team-oriented environment.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus in use of computer monitor and other manual, task-related functions.
  • Flexibility to travel.
  • Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in vegetation management, forestry, natural resources, biological, environmental and / or surveying.
  • Preferred ISA qualifications and certifications.
  • Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resources, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting general and protocol level field surveys, wetland delineations and permitting, permit compliance monitoring and / or inspections for construction projects.
  • Experience performing field work in California required.
  • Preferred knowledge with Field Maps, Google Earth, Onevizion, Collector, Pivvot, Citrix, and Fulcrum.
  • Ability to understand, articulate, and follow TRC and client standards, polices, and procedures.
  • Preferred to own a 4x4 vehicle. Not required.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Clean criminal record.
  • Be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must be able to work alone, make decisions and use judgment while performing work-related activities.
  • Creativity, foresight, and mature judgment to identify and resolve business, technical and administrative problems.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate clearly and concisely to prepare reports, specifications, applications, and correspondence.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including spreadsheet and word processing.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with California avian experience, listed species permits (or working toward permits), the ability to conduct wetland delineations, aquatic wildlife surveys, rare plant surveys, and other diverse biological field work.
  • Preference will also be given to applicants that have experience working on energy and transportation projects involving CEQA and NEPA, Clean Water Act permitting programs, and other local, state, and federal permitting programs.
  • Successful applicants will be able to interact in the field with clients, contractors, and environmental agency representatives.

  • Compensation

    In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

    Other Compensation :

    Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company's annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
