Typical duties for an EFDA include :
- Assist the dentist chair-side during procedures (four-handed dentistry : passing instruments, anticipating the provider’s needs).
- Prepare and maintain the treatment room / operatories : set up trays, sterilize instruments, ensure equipment is ready.
- Take and develop dental radiographs (x-rays) when permitted by state regulations.
- Apply preventive treatments : e.g., fluoride, dental sealants.
- Perform restorative or temporary procedures within allowed scope : e.g., place or contour fillings, adapt temporary crowns...
- Take dental impressions, pour models, prepare study casts or appliances (when allowed).
- Provide patient education on oral hygiene, post-operative instructions, and care plans.
- Maintain accurate patient records, charting treatment, updating dental software, and ensuring consent forms are completed.
- Order and maintain supplies, ensure infection-control standards, instrument sterilization, and compliance with OSHA / CDC guidelines.
