Mechanical Technician I / II (Maintenance Career Path)

This posting will be used to fill Full-time, Safety Sensitive, Represented positions in the Mechanical Technician proficiency advancement series in the Department of Public Works. The proficiency advancement series consists of Mechanical Technician I, Mechanical Technician II, and Senior Mechanical Technician. Employees non-competitively advance through the Mechanical Technician series by obtaining additional skills and certifications and receiving skill-based pay increases. A pre-hire test is conducted prior to an offer of employment to determine the candidates technical skill level and the appropriate starting rate of pay for the position.

Nature and variety of work

Work involves responsibility for a variety of maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but includes some related electrical duties. Responsibilities include independent execution of preventative and predictive maintenance tasks, inspection of operating conditions and performance of mechanical equipment and systems, and performing intermediate-level corrective maintenance tasks. The role may require assisting others with intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks and following specific instructions from a senior co-worker or supervisor. Work is inspected during progress and upon completion for quality, effectiveness, and safety. Employees in this classification are designated essential and must report to work as scheduled under all weather conditions, with frequent exposure to outdoor temperatures. Overtime, holidays, weekends, and standby duty may be required. This position may involve frequent bending, climbing, stooping, reaching, walking, crawling in tight spaces such as sewer pumping station wet wells and valve vaults where odors and gases may be present, and lifting heavy items up to 50 pounds. The Mechanical Technician I, Mechanical Technician II, and Senior Mechanical Technician are differentiated by skills, certifications, licensing, and demonstrated ability as defined in the Personal Qualifications Standards of the Maintenance Career Program Manual, a component of the Skill-Based EXCEL Flexible Worker Program.

Mechanical Technician I

Work involves responsibility for a variety of basic maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but may include some minor electrical duties. Tasks include independent performance of basic preventative maintenance, inspection of operating conditions and performance of mechanical equipment and systems, basic corrective maintenance, and assisting others with intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks. Work is performed under the supervision of senior co-workers or supervisors and is inspected for quality, effectiveness, and safety.

Mechanical Technician II

Work involves responsibility for a variety of intermediate maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but includes some related electrical duties. Tasks include independent performance of preventative and predictive maintenance, inspection of operating conditions, and performance of intermediate-level corrective maintenance tasks, with assistance to others on intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks. Work is performed under the supervision of senior co-workers or supervisors and is inspected for quality, effectiveness, and safety.

Minimum qualifications

The following positions are part of the Maintenance Career Path (MCP). These positions require a pre-hire test to determine technical skill level and starting rate of pay. MCP certifications are obtainable through employment with Anne Arundel County.

• Mechanical Technician I Graduation from high school; one (1) or more years of experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment (including engines, transmissions, gear drives, pumps, and valves); and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operators license.
• Mechanical Technician II Graduation from high school; MCP certification as Mechanical Technician I; two (2) or more years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and plumbing equipment; and a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operators license. Successful candidates who do not possess a valid commercial Class B license must obtain it within six (6) months of hire.

Note : The MCP certification as Mechanical Technician I may be substituted with a minimum of 200 hours of training from a recognized technical or manufacturers training school in welding, machine shop practices, and / or industrial mechanical maintenance or equivalent college credits in Mechanical specialization.
