about the role
As a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Crisis Services at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will play a key role in supporting our staff psychiatrist in prescribing, administering, and monitoring medications for clients. The residential treatment program is a 16-bed facility serving adults (18+) experiencing acute mental health or co-occurring substance use crises. It provides short-term stabilization in single-occupancy rooms. Your responsibilities will include conducting routine physical and mental health nursing assessments to ensure that each individual receives the appropriate treatment and medication support.
You'll provide supportive counseling, monitor medical needs, and, when necessary, administer methadone. You'll also conduct intake and follow-up interviews, complete physical assessments, perform drug and TB testing, and maintain detailed and accurate documentation. Your knowledge and attention to detail will help ensure the secure storage, handling, and disposal of medications, all while contributing to a safe, supportive, and high-quality care environment for our clients.
what you need to be successful
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Current and valid State Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the Virginia State Board of Nursing.
- One (1) year of experience in the administration of medication or a substance abuse treatment, psychiatric setting, or long-term care facility, including the dispensing of narcotic medication.
- A valid Virginia Driver's License is required, enabling you to fulfill various job responsibilities effectively.
Additionally, experience in substance abuse treatment, psychiatric care, or long-term care settings, particularly involving the dispensing of narcotic medications, is essential for success in this role. Strong communication and interpersonal skills will be key, as you will provide supportive counseling to clients while conducting thorough assessments. Your ability to use relevant software and tools will contribute to maintaining accurate records, ensuring a seamless operation in our commitment to quality care.
