Key Responsibilities

• 24-Hour Coverage:

• Assist in ensuring 24-hour nursing coverage for the Mental Health Unit, providing appropriate clinical treatment.

• Sick Call Coordination:

• Coordinate sick call for the Mental Health Unit, ensuring nurse triage and appropriate referrals for physician follow-up.

• Clinical Duties:

• Implement psychiatric and physician orders in a timely and clinically effective manner. Administer and monitor medications according to Mental Health Unit policies and procedures.

• Initial Nursing Assessment:

• Provide an Initial Nursing Assessment for inmates admitted to the Mental Health Unit as soon as the inmate’s condition permits.

• Documentation:

• Document changes in inmate functioning and critical incidents in the Medical Record.

• Nursing Discharge Summary:

• Complete Nursing Discharge Summaries when inmates are transferred from the Mental Health Unit.

• Psychiatric Services Coordination:

• Assist in coordinating psychiatric services to ensure timely communication with psychiatrists regarding medication compliance, changes in inmate functioning, and lab results.

• Group Counseling & Activities:

• Provide group counseling and activities, ensuring Level II inmates receive two (2) hours of out-of-cell time daily.

• Medication Administration Records (MARS):

• Ensure MARS are maintained and updated.

• Confidentiality Compliance:

• Abide by the facility’s security regulations and confidentiality requirements for inmate information.

• Medical Supplies Monitoring:

• Monitor medical supplies to maintain proper inventory and facilitate ordering.

• Effective Collaboration:

• Work effectively with Health Services staff, prison staff, and CMS administrative staff to ensure comprehensive care.

• Employee Standards Compliance:

• Comply with employee standards of CMS and applicable facility standards. This includes maintaining a professional working environment, ensuring harmonious relationships, and notifying supervisory personnel of absences.

Key Qualifications

• Registered Nurse License:

• Must have an active Registered Nurse (RN) license within the state of employment, with the license in good standing.

• Mental Health & Correctional Experience:

• Experience providing services to mentally ill patients and/or a correctional population is preferred.

• CPR Certification:

• Current CPR certification is required.

• Adherence to Health Services Bulletins:

• Must follow all applicable technical instructions and health services bulletins as per regulatory guidelines.

• Background Checks:

• Successful completion of a background check, security clearance, and drug screening required.
