Unit Clerk
The Unit Clerk performs clerical duties and coordinates the communication of a unit to assist with patient and family-centered care activities. Ensures the flow of operations for the assigned nursing station / area is timely and efficient.
Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of clerical duties necessary to help patient care activities. Initiates, assembles, and maintains patient charts under established procedures.
- Prepares patient labels / armbands as needed for incoming unit admissions.
- Processes patient admissions, transfers, and discharges. Informs team members of reports and other pertinent information.
- Greets patients and visitors in waiting areas, directing them to other departments, and keeping them informed of wait times.
- Answers telephones and manages the patient call system. Serves as an information resource to patients, staff, and visitors. Interacts appropriately with all age groups.
- Completes and maintains unit and patient records, files, forms and documents related to work area management and patient care to include admissions, surgeries, transfers, discharges, medical records.
- Maintains organized work area of records, files, forms, and reference documents. Checks, updates and maintains facility boards, pneumatic tube system and telemetry box reconciliation according to departmental policy, procedures and / or guidelines.
- Prepares reports, purchase orders, projects, memos and letters using computer programs.
- Prepares and sends documents via facsimile; maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations and MSRH hospital policies.
- Tracks call light response time for the unit as needed. Assigns and distributes communication devices to appropriate staff.
- Performs work area duties as directed by the nurse or physician. Runs errands, retrieves supplies and transports patients.
- Maintains par levels of inventory including requisitions / forms and stocks work area supplies and equipment.
- Coordinates transportation for patients and patient items as delegated.
- Fulfills the role as a patient sitter when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of Windows-based software packages. Basic computer experience required.Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and interact in a positive manner with patients, families, staff, physicians and the community.Organized, accurate, detail oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet demands.Excellent telephone etiquette skills.Promotes a culture of safety and is proactive with implementing initiatives.Required Skills
1 year of equivalent hospital experience required. Experience with Epic is preferred.
