Descripción del trabajoDaily cleaning and sanitizing of bathroom facilities : Floors, toilets, walls, partitions, sinks, mirrors, showers, windows, glass doors Uses brooms, mops, buckets, vacuum cleaners, and other cleaning equipment Daily cleaning of interior facility spaces : Offices, halls, classrooms, labs, food service areas, common areas General outdoor services and maintenance : Sweeping entry areas Cleaning mirrors, windows, and glass doors as needed Collects and disposes of trash and recyclable materials from all facilities Provides custodial services for scheduled and unscheduled events : May include irregular shifts (nights, days, weekdays, weekends, holidays) Attends to emergency needs as required Safety and compliance : Wears, uses, and maintains proper personal protective equipment Tracks safety data sheets, work orders, and facility forms Observes safety rules and regulations Identifies and reports safety issues, posting warning signs as needed Inventory management : Stocks supplies in custodial closet for assigned building Identifies and reports equipment, supplies, and repairs needed Security : Locks / unlocks classrooms as assigned Secures campus buildings daily (doors and windows) Floor care : Completes assigned work orders (stripping, waxing, carpet cleaning) Special events : Assists with campus graduations and other functions Monitors lobbies and restrooms during events Knowledge and skills : Understands custodial methods, materials, chemicals, and equipment Follows safety and sanitation practices Prioritizes and manages multiple projects / tasks Estimates material and equipment needs Makes timely decisions appropriate to responsibility level Supports established recycling efforts Emergency response : Addresses urgent custodial needs (e.g., spills, body fluid clean-up) Follows OSHA standards for blood-borne pathogen exposure control Maintenance and reporting : Reports unsafe conditions, suspicious activity, and maintenance issues Properly uses and manages cleaning supplies Continuous improvement : Stays informed about emerging technologies and industry benchmarks Works effectively as a team member, supporting LU's mission Additional responsibilities : Performs seasonal tasks (e.g., snow shoveling) Completes other duties as assigned This position requires a high school degree or GED. 1-3 years of related experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Clean and professional appearance. Must be courteous, detailed oriented. self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills. Must be able to lift to 50+ pounds and perform duties of the Custodial trade in typical Virginia Climate and in an indoor / outdoor setting. Experience with residential, and / or commercial / industrial cleaning (methods and safety) field is preferred. Working knowledge of safe and efficient operation of electrically and propane powered and manual cleaning equipment. Must be willing to be trained and follow directions. Ability to carry out written instructions and implement tasks, as well as be able to bend, crouch, kneel, stand, and walk for long periods of time. Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information. Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner. Must be able to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited supervision. Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Must be able to maintain work areas in a clean and organized fashion. Must be flexible regarding work assignments, as they will routinely change. Must be able to think logically and solve problems that arise with little guidance. Must have basic knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions. Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates. Strong organizational skills. Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature. Occasionally required to travel to local and off campus locations. Able to walk and stand on feet for 8-hour period. Able to physically perform all essential custodial functions for an entire workday. Able to bend, crouch, kneel, and work on hands and knees, when necessary. Able to walk up and down stairs. Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds and perform duties of Custodial cleaning craft. Able to perform repetitive motions including, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, wiping, and scrubbing. Able to operate cleaning and floor machines safely and properly. Able to work with arms lifted overhead. Able to work in dusty conditions. Vision adequate to see dust, debris, and moisture on floors and other surfaces. Able to work without allergies or sensitivities to cleaning agents, odors, and products used by the Facility department. Able to clean and sanitize areas when sewage backs up into a facility, or when bodily fluid / excrement is present. Able to work efficiently and competently individually or as part of a team. Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily hours as well as various evening hours. Ability to use radio and telephone to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions. Must be able to perform physically demanding work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, and standing, walking, and driving. The working environment in which
Custodian Position
Custodians are responsible for maintaining multisensory excellence standards for all LU facilities, on and off campus, by way of cleaning and sanitizing interior spaces. Emphasizing a clean, orderly, and aesthetically pleasing environment; Custodians will work alongside teammates and supervisors, utilizing good judgement to support the University's mission by providing a safe and sanitary environment. Custodians are considered essential personnel and are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delay, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather conditions. Any other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The standard custodial work shift hours are as follows :
- 1st shift : 6 : 30a-3pm
- 2nd Shift : 3pm-1 : 30am (10-hour shift @ 4 days a week) includes additional pay differential.
- 3rd Shift : 10 : 30pm-7am includes additional pay differential.
