This Housekeeping Aide / Environmental Services Technician (EVS) Supervisor position is with the Environmental Management Services (EMS), at VA Boston Healthcare System, West Roxbury Facility, 1400 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA 02132. There are two (2) positions, each full time at 40 hours per week.

Position 1 : Shift- 2 : 30p - 11p, Wed-Thurs-Fri-Sat-Sun (days off Mon & Tues.) Position 2 : Shift - 2 : 30p - 11p, Mon-Tues-Wed-Sat-Sun (days off Thurs & Fri).

Responsibilities Duties may include, but not limited to :

• Responsible for assigning staff for routine and non-routine duties on a daily and a project-by-project basis
• Reorganize work schedules efficiently to ensure work is accomplished in a timely manner
• Responsible for the cleaning of all patient areas, corridor spaces throughout the Medical Center, Operating Rooms, and all other areas as assigned
• Responsible for assuring the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision
• Plans daily and weekly assignments, scheduling periodic work for areas
• Trains staff and ensure that they are using the patient centered care principles in terms of customer service to patients, patients' family members and personnel
• Provides on-the job training for subordinates as individual needs dictate
• Schedules regular meetings with staff to make them aware of new procedures or directives
• Keeps subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures and uses of equipment and supplies; control the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit
• May supervise the daily distribution of uniforms and textiles to the designated areas and persons and ensures record keeping is timely and accurate
• Responsible for the coordination of activities with other services, including re-arranging work schedules during remodeling, painting and relocation of offices, clinics or patient wards
• Routinely inspects assigned areas to assure the timely accomplishment of employee assignments, sanitation levels are maintained, equipment properly cared for and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner

Interchange Agreements with Other Merit System : Employees who occupy medical or medical-related positions and were appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) [formerly 38 U.S.C. 4104 (1) and (3)] must be serving in a full-time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year in this other merit system to be eligible to convert to the Title 5 System. EXPERIENCE : A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT : Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. PHYSICAL EFFORT : The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.

WORKING CONDITIONS : Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.
