Finance Director – Huntsman Mental Health Institute

Overview

We are seeking a new Finance Director for the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), part of University of Utah Health Hospitals and Clinics. The role provides strategic leadership and oversight for the financial management of the organization’s behavioral health portfolio—including the mental health hospital, crisis care center, outpatient behavioral health programs, and other facilities. Reporting jointly to the Chief Administrative Officer of the Huntsman Mental Health Hospital and the Associate Chief Financial Officer of U Health, the Finance Director directs all financial, human resources, and customer service functions within the assigned area to ensure operational efficiency, fiscal integrity, and support for high-quality patient care.

The Finance Director oversees budgeting, accounting, reimbursement, forecasting, and financial analysis, partnering closely with operational and clinical leaders to optimize resource utilization and maintain productivity standards. The role promotes transparency, data‑driven decision making, compliance with financial and regulatory standards, and alignment with system‑wide strategic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform to required standards for job‑specific responsibilities and technical competencies.
  • Hire, train, develop, and communicate with staff.
  • Develop, monitor, and achieve budget goals; manage labor and non‑labor expenses; manage revenue to maximize potential revenue.
  • Ensure patient satisfaction scores meet assigned area targets and uphold PROMISE standards for direct reports and team members.
  • Achieve quality goals for assigned area and promote continuous process improvements.
  • Provide staff feedback on performance, conduct timely appraisals and coaching, and resolve conflicts proactively.
  • Build positive relationships with staff, peers, and senior leadership to support the mission, vision, values, and performance standards of the organization; engage staff with updates, news, decisions, and recognition.
  • Apply leadership, human relations, and effective communication skills.
  • Determine appropriate staff mixes to support patient and customer needs.
  • Apply knowledge of hospital business operations and demonstrate strategic planning skills.
  • Use budgeting practices, reporting analysis, and forecasting.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or related area, or equivalent experience.
  • Six years of progressive management experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or related area.

    The position is primarily sedentary in an office setting, may impose up to 10 pounds of exertion, and may require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving objects. It involves sitting most of the time and is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

    Salary

    $300,000 – $350,000.
