Founded in 1987, Damien Center is Indiana's oldest and largest AIDS service organization (ASO) and serves more than 8000 individuals living with or at risk for HIV through a comprehensive, innovative approach to care and prevention. Our services include care coordination, clinical and pharmacy services, mental health, housing, and nutrition.

Position Summary :

As a member of the executive leadership team, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) facilitates organizational growth through strategic fundraising strategies and the relationship development of individuals, businesses, foundations, and others to support the work of Damien Center. The CDO develops and manages multi-year plans for revenue generation, focusing on unrestricted funds. This role provides leadership in soliciting and securing financial resources, enhancing the organization's visibility, and fostering lasting relationships with donors, corporate partners, foundations, and other stakeholders. The CDO works collaboratively with the President and CEO, board of directors, the marketing team, and staff to lead efforts that expand the agency's mission, vision, and goals.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Leadership

  • Acts as a leader and ambassador promoting Damien Center's mission and values with staff, clients and patients, funders, and community stakeholders
  • In collaboration with the executive leadership team, identifies key investment opportunities for funders, develops branding and marketing messaging, creates opportunities for volunteerism and community engagement.
  • Develops, monitors and manages budgets for development, volunteerism, and other assigned activities, ensuring efficient use of resources as well as providing regular progress reports on fundraising and donor engagement to the executive team and board
  • Provides coaching and supervision for fundraising staff fostering a culture of high-performance, collaboration, and mutual accountability

Fundraising

  • Develop and execute multi-year fundraising strategies to increase ROI to 1.5 or higher on fundraising activities by the end of year three and annually thereafter, with a goal of $1MM in year one and $1.4MM in year three for individual and corporate giving.
  • Fosters a culture of philanthropy and innovation that ensures fund development strategies are executed in keeping with the organization's values, vision, and mission.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and executes all fundraising activities including the implementation of a comprehensive annual, major, capital, and planned gifts program for individual donors, corporations, and foundations
  • Establishes performance measures, monitors results, and evaluates the efficacy of the fund development programs and events.
  • Works with grant writer to ensure private grant goals, prospect research, proposal development, submission opportunities, and timely reporting.

  • Guides the President and CEO and Board of Directors on major donor acquisition, key roles, and prospect management.
  • Creates, maintains, and enhances donor and gift recognition programs, including donor cultivation events and programs
  • Oversee the development of sponsorship proposals, gift agreements and other appropriate correspondence necessary to close and document new gifts and commitments.
  • Assures timely and accurate documentation of gifts and donor acknowledgements in our database
  • Keeps abreast of best practices in philanthropy and fund development.
  • Attends Board of Directors meetings and manages the Development Committee
  • Performs special assignments and other work, on an as-needed basis.
  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with donors, sponsors, and corporate partners, ensuring personalized engagement and timely recognition
  • Research opportunities for grants, sponsorships, gifts, and donations
  • Oversees the management of all fundraising events with a focus on Grande Masquerade and Dining Out for Life.
  • Community Engagement & Volunteerism

  • Oversees the recruitment, training, and motivation of volunteers throughout the organization
  • Develops meaningful engagement opportunities for individuals and groups that support our programs and services
  • Implements best practices for volunteer management and retention strategies
  • Assures that volunteers are recognized and celebrated
  • Education and / or Experience

    7–10 years in senior leadership roles within nonprofit development, marketing, or advocacy, with demonstrated success in major fundraising campaigns. Proven track record in cultivating and securing major gifts. Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, marketing, business administration, communications, or a related field required, Master's degree preferred. Fundraising certifications : Certificate Fundraising Executive (CFRE) or Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) or willingness to work toward certification. Demonstrated success in strategic planning operations and financial management.

  • Work experience may substitute for education requirements on a case-by-case basis.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

    Possess superior organizational and administrative skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. Ability to work independently and achieve high standards of productivity, achieving deadlines and with superior product results. Strong calendaring, organizational, and document management skills required. Proactive approach to solving problems and communicating to leadership. Knowledge of office management systems, procedures, and office equipment required. Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work.
