Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

TRC Companies, Inc., a pioneer in groundbreaking scientific and engineering services, is seeking an experienced  Staff Scientist  to join our Permitting, Planning and Licensing team in  Birmingham, AL .

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS

The position requires a strong technical background and a solid reputation of building and maintaining key client relationships, and will include :

  • Conducting biological field surveys which may include wetland / waterbody (in accordance with USACE requirements), habitat, or wildlife and plant species-specific surveys; conduct breeding bird and raptor surveys.
  • Preparing wetland reports and obtain jurisdictional determinations.
  • Preparing Joint Permit Applications for USACE Section 10 / 404 and state permit applications.
  • Preparing technical reports / correspondence.
  • Providing support for mitigation activities including mitigation banking options for client projects or permittee-responsible options requiring the development of Wetlands Mitigation Plans, mitigation site design, and conducting monitoring / reporting to Agencies.
  • Communicating and coordinating with agencies during permitting review process and attending meetings with clients and Federal, State and local agencies such as pre-application meetings, geologic review meetings, etc.
  • Preparing reports from field surveys.
  • Providing technical support in responding to requests for proposals.

Position will also include working with other TRC project managers and market directors on the following :

  • Strategic pursuits, including proposal development and client meetings, and help to maintain strong relationships with key planning leaders.
  • Developing efficient business development strategies for new and existing customers and participate in strategic growth initiatives to expand TRCs client and delivery footprint across the Gulf / South region.
  • Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree in environmental science, natural resources, biology, ecology, or related field, and 3 to 5 years of post-degree experience.
  • Applicants must have experience permitting projects at the federal, state, and local levels and be able to effectively coordinate field work, support other technical staff, interact in the field with clients, agencies, stakeholders and contractors, and manage budgets, invoicing and schedules.
  • Strong ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply environmental compliance and permitting regulations of applicable regulatory agencies in the Gulf / South region.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical communication skills are mandatory, along with the ability to maintain a positive attitude working under aggressive schedules.
  • The candidate must have a strong ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously. The ability to prepare clear and concise reports, procedures, correspondence, and other written materials is also required.
  • PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Experience writing NEPA related documents such as Environmental Assessments, Categorical Exclusions and related technical reports.
  • Experience routing linear projects across landscapes to avoid and minimize environmental impact.
  • Experience evaluating existing or proposed projects for impacts to the environment, necessary permit procedures and potential fatal flaws (due diligence).

    Other Compensation : Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
