The Position

Candidates will be required to demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)

The Educational Services Division is currently accepting applications for the Paraeducator - Special Education ASL position, to assist teachers and / or other certificated personnel by performing a variety of instructional support duties to individual or small groups of Special Education pupils in a classroom or resource environment encompassing a range of physical, emotional, intellectual, and communication disabilities for severely and non-severely handicapped pupils; assists in the establishment and maintenance of appropriate classroom and site behavior; performs specialized language translation for students in the Special Education program who may be deaf and / or hard of hearing, who utilize American Sign Language (ASL) as the primary modality of communication; performs a routine of clerical tasks as assigned.

You can help these highly visual learners thrive as they learn the academic, communication and socialization skills that will make them successful in school and help them progress in their trajectory towards higher education.

This position is part-time, in-person, and has a work year of 11 months, 193 days, 6 hours per day.

Education and Experience

EDUCATION :

Candidates must meet one of the three Options :

Option 1 :

  • Possession of a high school diploma or its GED equivalent AND at least 48 college semester units earned at an accredited institution of higher learning

Option 2 :

  • Possession of a high school diploma or its GED equivalent AND possession of a degree earned at an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Option 3 :

  • Possession of a high school diploma or it's GED equivalent AND the ability to obtain a passing score on the County Office of Education Paraprofessional Examination
  • Please note : If you were educated outside of the US, you must have your foreign transcripts evaluated by an approved agency prior to being invited to the written exam. The evaluated summary must state you have completed high school, and if applicable, any college degrees held.

    EXPERIENCE :

    Paid or volunteer experience working with or serving individuals with exceptional needs or behavioral deficits is preferred.

    LICENSES AND OTHER RQUIREMENTS :

    Incumbents must be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and pass a proficiency exam in ASL.

    EXAMINATION PROCEDURES

  • Assessments and interviews will take place virtually via Zoom Meetings.
  • Following the final filing date, the qualifications of all candidates will be evaluated.
  • The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a written exam, scheduled throughout the month
  • Those who pass the written exam will be invited to participate in an oral examination with subject matter experts, tentatively scheduled scheduled throughout the month
  • Based on the final scores of qualified candidates, Classified Personnel Services will establish a ranked candidate list.
  • Candidates will be invited over email to participate in examination and selection steps, using the email supplied within their Governmentjobs.com applications, or as updated by candidates in their Governmentjobs.com master profiles. Therefore, it is recommended that candidates check their email at least daily.
  • NOTE : Examination procedures are subject to change as deemed necessary by the Director - Classified Personnel Services. Candidates who test successfully for placement on the eligibility list may be certified to other related positions without further testing requirements, OR job posting announcements.
