Job Description :
Reporting directly to the Exploration Manager the Senior Exploration Geologist is responsible for working with project teams to discover or contribute to the acquisition of potentially economic deposits within the assigned area. As required, the Senior Exploration Geologist will plan, implement, and execute safe, cost-effective exploration programs and participate in new opportunity reviews, due diligence and exploration project reviews as required. Work will also focus on the technical development of project teams to enhance the company’s geologic understanding of economic deposits.
The day to day : Project Exploration
Strong understanding of mineral system controls (structural, geological, mineralization, alteration) and deposit models / styles / footprints expected for Carlin, Epithermal and Orogenic gold deposits.
Plan, implement and manage exploration programs by overseeing the management of project field crews and teams, technical data acquisition, and assign clear goals and deliverables to achieve program objectives.
Assist and advise managers with the development, recommendation, and implementation of approved exploration programs within specified time and budget constraints.
Undertake geological, geochemical, structural and geophysical interpretation of exploration data. Combine multi-disciplinary data sets to provide an integrated summary of projects and enable evaluation of exploration potential.
Develop and manage working 3D models of exploration areas.
Ensure data management and validation for all US exploration programs are completed in line with SSR procedures.
Collect geological data including geological mapping, stream, soil, auger, rock chip samples, and describe samples as required to enable integration into geological interpretations.
Implement and manage drill programs including thorough contractor management as well as systematic core and chip logging.
Mentor junior staff, partners, and contractors in exploration techniques and SSR expectations – specifically mapping, core and chip logging, geochemical sampling and interpretation, assay techniques and QAQC.
Communicate project status and progress on a regular basis. This includes weekly and monthly technical reporting, and periodic exploration reviews.
Ensure reporting requirements are completed in agreed time frames.
Project Generation
Assist in project reviews and site visits as needed contributing towards potential property acquisitions.
Evaluate third-party data / information, provide a synthesis of exploration completed and outline exploration potential.
Develop innovative data analysis techniques and methodologies to improve mineral deposit area selection, targeting and project management.
Safety, Health, Environment, Community
Ensure SSR policies and processes are followed in all work programs while leading by example.
Ability to recognize and stop any exploration activity deemed to be unsafe or likely to have an environmental impact due to inadequate management.
Implement SSR safety management systems and tools to manage safety risk.
Ensure legal duty of care associated with exploration is well understood for projects under your management, and that the wider team understands requirements.
Coach and influence SSR employees, partners and contractors on safety and health procedures.
Work with team members to ensure practical and proactive solutions are achieved for safety risks identified and ensure identified actions are implemented and closed out.
Ensure environmental management requirements are imbedded in all exploration programs and assist in implementing programs to manage environmental compliance.
As appropriate and required, complete basic stakeholder engagement (e.g. JV meeting presentations, local community liaison) and contractor management (e.g. drill supervision, soil sample supervision, geophysical contractor supervision).
Is this you?
B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Geology
10 years of related experience in the mining / exploration industry
Strong understanding of ore deposit geology and multidisciplinary exploration methods with a desire for discovery
Enthusiasm, drive and proactive team leadership skills
Demonstrated experience utilizing exploration data, preparing exploration reports, and drill core logging.
Strong problem-solving and 3-dimensional thinking skills
Ability to work both independently and within a team, in a rapidly changing environment
Ability and willingness to travel to and work at SSR Mining’s exploration properties for extended periods of time (3 to 4 weeks duration)
Exposure to both Brownfields and Greenfields exploration targeting.
Experience in project generation.
Excellent skills in industry standard software (ArcGIS, Leapfrog etc.)
Professional Geoscientist designation an asset
