Job description

Single Family - Policy - Lead Associate

Playing an essential role in the U.S. economy, Fannie Mae is foundational to housing finance. Here, your expertise can help fuel purpose-driven innovation that expands access to homeownership and affordable rental housing across the country. Join Fannie Mae to grow your career and help people find a place to call home.

As a valued colleague on our team, you will provide expert advice and guidance to team members on developing a policy framework and implementing changes that align with Fannie Mae's strategy. In this role, you will ensure policies reflect the appropriate risk tolerance and compliance with all relevant regulatory guidance, drive policy alignment within digital strategies, and provide guidance on internal policies, business standards, and regulatory interpretation.

The SF Risk Policy Lead Associate role will offer you the flexibility to make each day your own, while working alongside people who care so that you can deliver on the following responsibilities:

  • Refine the enterprise's Single Family credit risk and underwriting policies.
  • Ensure policies reflect appropriate risk tolerance and comply with applicable regulatory guidance, supervisory expectations, and internal governance standards.
  • Support digital and strategic initiatives by ensuring underwriting polices are clearly defined, aligned, and consistently applied across digital platforms.
  • Provide guidance on internal policies, business standards, and regulatory interpretation to support sound risk and compliance decisions.
  • Support policy change initiatives by assessing impacts, documenting requirements, and advising on implementation approaches.
  • Develop and maintain policies that effectively balance risk management with business innovation, enabling responsible growth while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Single-Family business teams, and enterprise risk partners to ensure policies are consistent, well-governed, and effectively communicated.
  • Analyze emerging risks, market trends, and regulatory changes to ensure our policies reflect the risks and opportunities presented in the current environment. Consider, where applicable, relevant enterprise systems and processes to develop optimal policy guidance.

The experience you bring to the team:

  • At least 4 years related experience in the primary or secondary mortgage market
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present appropriately for varied audiences at all levels of the organization
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Experience collaborating across different functional areas to achieve a common goal
  • Ability to gather accurate information to explain concepts and answer critical questions
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills to balance multiple projects
  • Shows curiosity and adaptability in learning and responsibly applying new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to reimagine how we work.

Desired experiences:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent
  • Comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end mortgage loan lifecycle and secondary market dynamics
  • Strategic thinking skills and ability to align digital initiatives with business goals
  • Risk assessment and management skills, including evaluating risk and identifying controls.
  • Experience in the development of products and/or policy throughout the lifecycle, including consideration of operational impacts and implementation
  • Problem solving skills, including identifying problems, developing and evaluating options, and implementing solutions.
  • Ability to manage relationships, including managing and engaging stakeholders, customers, and vendors, and building relationship networks
  • Presentation skills, including leading policy discussion forums for internal and external groups.
  • Experience building, maintaining, and analyzing reports and developing workflows.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Level Degree (Required)
