About us
One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we're on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We're looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.
What you'll do
As a Software Engineer, you're on the core team that enables Viasat's cloud-native software applications to be developed, deployed, and operated securely across the globe. Our team builds the viasat.io platform, a suite of bedrock network and security services that teams at Viasat use to build and protect their products. We also serve as advisors for other engineering teams, helping them make better use of cloud technologies and practices.
On any given day, you may be walking colleagues through the finer points of VPC design or presenting a workshop on building applications that leverage viasat.io's platform APIs. You might be adding features to our identity system, automating TLS certificate validation across the entire network, or deploying our services to a new continent. Our challenges and our products are always evolving.
The day-to-day
The position involves building innovative solutions using open source technology within Viasat's ecosystem, while effectively leveraging third-party cloud provider services. The role requires direct collaboration with our engineering customers to understand their needs, propose new features, and suggest platform changes aimed at enhancing usability, reducing costs, and improving security.
The job entails driving new features from concept to reality by designing, building, testing, securing, shipping, and operating them. It also includes building self-service platforms and applications by automating, optimizing, and enhancing reliability. The candidate will take ownership of parts of the team's code, architectures, tools, technology, and developer experience, ensuring high quality, velocity, uptime, and customer satisfaction. Additionally, the role involves participating in the on-call rotation.
What you'll need
- BS / BA degree or equivalent experience
- 4+ years of hands-on experience writing software
- Highly experienced in at least one programming language, with strong proficiency in others : Python, Java, JavaScript, C / C++, Go, Ruby. Most of our code is written in Python and Java.
- Strong experience with cloud platforms, either AWS or GCP
- Strong understanding of the challenges engineers face when developing native cloud applications and infrastructure
- Strong ability to navigate a Linux filesystem and understand networking and security concepts
- Being a patient and clear communicator
- US Citizenship required
