Job Summary
This coding position involves reviewing medical records and accurately assigning ICD-10-CM and ICD-10 PCS codes. You will also assign Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRG) or All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRG) based on the type of insurance and extract specific data elements for each case, adhering to federal regulations. You will code various inpatient records and follow official coding guidelines, ethical standards, and institutional procedures. You will use 3M 360 software according to standard workflows and ensure compliance with Michigan Medicine policies, maintaining required quality and productivity standards.

Responsibilities
Clinical Data Abstraction and Coding :
Review medical records to identify and abstract pertinent information.+ Assign appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes for billing, research, statistics, financial planning, and compliance ensuring accuracy and adherence to guidelines from governmental and third-party payers.
Code Assignment and Verification :
Accurately assign ICD-10 codes that correspond to documented medical conditions and procedures.+ Ensure the correct Medicare Severity-Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG) or All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Group (APR-DRG) is assigned.+ Verify patient discharge dispositions and assign Present on Admission (POA) indicators.
Independent Judgment :
Apply clinical knowledge to recognize the complexity of cases.+ Research complex diagnoses or procedures to enhance coding accuracy.+ Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) teams to consult with physicians for improved documentation.
Compliance and Sequencing :
Capture the correct principal diagnosis, co-existing conditions, principal and secondary procedures for inpatient admissions.+ Ensure coding complies with federal and state regulations.+ Sequence codes to reflect accurate severity of illness and risk of mortality.
Interdepartmental Interaction :
Work closely with Clinical Documentation Specialists and DRG Compliance Auditors.+ Professionally query medical staff for accurate documentation to ensure coding compliance.
Continued Education and Meetings :
Stay updated with coding guidelines and attend quarterly AHA Coding Clinic sessions.+ Participate in required system, hospital, and departmental meetings and educational sessions.
Quality and Productivity :
Ensure accuracy and maintain established quality, productivity standards, and key performance indicators.
Required Qualifications
An Associate?s degree and registered with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as an RHIT or RHIA.+ Candidates can be RHIT / RHIA credential-eligible with successful attainment of the credential within six months of hire.+ Certification must be maintained through continuing education.+ Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, treatment methods, patient care assessment, data collection techniques, and coding classification systems.
Modes of Work
Mobile / Remote - the work requirements allow for the majority or all the work to be completed offiste. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite if necssitated by unit leadership or their designee and / or the job requirements.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
